Urban Designer
About the Role
Our Sydney studio is seeking a talented Urban Designer with 5+ years' experience to join our accomplished team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a well-developed design eye and a background in urban design or mixed-use architecture to help expand Populous' precinct and master planning capabilities.
You'll bring strong communication skills and the ability to think creatively, critically, and strategically across a diverse range of projects. With proficiency in Rhino and Grasshopper, and experience using Adobe Creative Cloud, you'll enhance the way we tell the stories behind our designs.
This role is well suited to someone who thrives in collaboration, is comfortable working across multiple projects at once, and is motivated by the challenge of designing better places for communities to come together.
About us at Populous
At Populous, our teams design the places where people love to be together. We are a unique global company built on the philosophy and power of drawing large groups of people together to have incredible experiences.
Populous is globally recognised for our expertise in stadiums and arenas, but our work extends far beyond venue design. In Sydney and across the APAC region, we are increasingly leading projects in precinct design, master planning, mixed-use developments, and large-scale urban strategies.
At our core, we are urban designers with a true focus on user experience, creating civic infrastructure that brings whole communities together for amazing experiences, our sustainable design ethos is central to everything we do. This legacy of creating world class venues continues to inspire our future work.
Why Populous stands out from the rest
We don't consider ourselves just another architecture and design company. At Populous, we know that our strength comes from our diversity. Our APAC team represents over 35 different nationalities from all walks of life, and we actively celebrate and support this.
We are proud to be endorsed by Work180 for our commitment to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for women, and to have appeared in their Top 100 Employers for Women in 2024.
At Populous provides our people with:
- Flexible work arrangements to support work-life balance
- Enhanced paid leave entitlements, including fertility, parental, study, blood donation and more
- Global career opportunities across our international offices
- An entertainment allowance to enjoy venues we've helped bring to life
- Career development opportunities, including leadership development, mentorship, CPD, and technical workshops
- A vibrant social culture, with a variety of activities and events organised by our POP social team
What will you be engaged in?
As an Urban Designer at Populous, you'll contribute to all stages of the urban design process, from concept and precinct planning through to detailed delivery, supported by a team of highly experienced designers. You will be able to work independently while seeking the information and collaboration needed to work effectively.
Most importantly, this role will suit someone who is passionate about designing a better world. Our work spans a wide range of projects, including precinct design, master planning, concept design, and design competitions.
In this role you will:
- Contribute to precinct planning, master planning, concept design, and design competitions
- Develop and test design ideas using Rhino and Grasshopper
- Produce compelling graphics and design communications using Adobe Creative Cloud
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, balancing independent initiative with effective teamwork
- Participate in design discussions, applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Bring creativity and rigour to projects that range from complex urban strategies to high-profile design competitions
This is a role where you'll actively contribute to projects that shape communities, while continuing to grow your skills and build your career.
What are we looking for?
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- A degree in Urban Design, Architecture, or a related discipline
- 5+ years' experience in urban design or mixed-use architectural projects
- A strong design sensibility and the ability to translate ideas into compelling visual outputs
- Proficiency in Rhino and Grasshopper
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud for graphic storytelling and communication
- Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills
- A collaborative, proactive attitude with the ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously
Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a passion for creating better places and communities through design.
At Populous, we're not only looking for great technical skills but also for people who share our passion for creating places where communities come together.
We design the places that bring people together — and we know that happens best when our own team reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. We encourage people of all identities, abilities, and lived experiences to apply and join us in shaping the future of design.
