Position: Fibreglass Laminator Department: Production Reports to: Production Manager / Workshop Supervisor Location: Tomago NSW

Hourly Rate: Depending on Experience

Position Summary:

The Fibreglass Laminator is a skilled and detail-oriented tradesperson responsible for the fabrication of high-quality fibreglass products. This role involves working with resins, catalysts, and various fibreglass reinforcement materials to produce a wide range of components and structures, from small parts to large-scale products. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to quality, safety, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lamination & Fabrication:

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine lay-up schedules and material requirements.

  • Accurately measure, cut, and shape fibreglass reinforcement materials (mats, cloths, roving) to fit the mould.
  • Prepare and mix resins and catalysts in the correct proportions, ensuring proper ratios and consistency.
  • Apply fibreglass and resin to moulds using a variety of techniques, including hand lay-up, wet lay-up, and spray-up (using a chopper gun).
  • Consolidate layers with rollers and brushes to eliminate air bubbles and ensure thorough resin saturation.
  • Monitor the curing process, adjusting temperature and conditions as necessary to achieve optimal bond strength and finish.
  • Quality Control & Finishing:

  • Conduct visual and tactile inspections of finished products to identify and rectify defects such as air voids, uneven surfaces, or delamination.

  • Trim and finish cured materials using hand tools, grinders, and sanders.
  • Perform repairs on damaged or defective fibreglass products.
  • Ensure all finished products meet the company's quality standards and project specifications.
  • Safety & Compliance:

  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, gloves, and protective clothing.

  • Handle hazardous materials (resins, catalysts, acetone) in accordance with safety data sheets (MSDS) and company protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring proper disposal of waste and materials.
  • Report all hazards, incidents, and near misses to the supervisor.
  • General Duties:

  • Maintain and clean all tools and equipment, including spray guns, rollers, and brushes.

  • Collaborate with the production team, managers, and other departments to meet production targets and deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials used and production output.
  • Assist with other general workshop duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Fibreglass Laminator or in a similar composites manufacturing role.
  • Knowledge of different lamination techniques, including hand lay-up and spray-up.
  • Familiarity with various resin systems (polyester, vinylester, epoxy) and reinforcement materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and lay-up specifications.
  • Strong understanding of workshop safety practices and chemical handling procedures.
