About Us
At Oxfam Australia, we believe all lives are equal and no one should live in poverty. We are a member of Oxfam International, a global confederation working with partners and local communities in 87 countries.
Would you like to join this global movement of people working together to eliminate the inequalities that keep people in poverty?
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and committed person to fill the role of Media Advisor.
Why you will love working at Oxfam
As part of the Public Engagement team, you will use your skills, qualifications, lived experience and initiative to tackle inequality and fight poverty. Yes, you read that right, lived experience and initiative, because it is not all about key selection criteria.
Research shows that women will only apply for a job if they meet 100% of the selection criteria, while men will apply if they meet an average of 60%. We understand that life teaches us so much, so if you don't meet all the criteria but just know that you have what it takes, then please apply.
Are you re-entering the workforce after a career break? Don't worry We are looking for people with a fire in their belly and a commitment to ending poverty. As long as you know your subject matter, we can teach you the other stuff and show you what's happened while you were away.
The Role
Oxfam Australia (OAU) is one of the most influential international social justice organisations in Australia and part of one of the most effective international confederations of aid and humanitarian agencies.
We are working towards a better, more equal world for all of us - where women and men can use their own ideas, voices and actions to build a future free from the injustice of poverty. Oxfam delivers long-term development programming, humanitarian responses and practices high-level advocacy and campaigning.
Oxfam Australia is an innovative, rights-based agency that leads development debates and practice, works to influence government policy in Australia and around the globe to improve the lives of poor people, and has a strong focus on human rights.
As the Media Adviser, you will be within the Public Engagement section, an area charged with connecting with the hearts and minds of Australians to tackle poverty together. The Public Engagement section enables Oxfam Australia to speak out on the big issues, hold decision-makers to account and encourage supporters to invest in systemic change. We work collectively with Fundraising to ensure that supporters are at the centre of our engagement and raise awareness of Oxfam to drive growth in brand, donors, influence and income.
In this role, you will collaborate with others across the agency in order to develop and implement media strategies that support strategic priorities, maximising reactive media opportunities and liaising with media outlets and content creators/social media commentators to ensure Oxfam Australia maintains its strong share of voice in the Australian media market.
A little about you (the key selection criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Ability to develop and implement innovative and creative media strategies and materials, including for new media and social media commentators, to support Oxfam's emergency and humanitarian work, development programs, events, campaigns, and advocacy.
- A demonstrated understanding of the changing media landscape and the media industry's needs and operations
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organisational, and written skills, with proven ability to produce high-quality media and publicity materials that translate complex information into clear and compelling content while meeting tight deadlines.

- Experience working as a journalist or media adviser, with an established network of media and/or influencer contacts, and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships,
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities, particularly in fast-moving advocacy, campaign, or humanitarian contexts.
We can offer you
- A base salary of $98,535.26 plus superannuation, superior leave benefits and access to a generous not-for-profit salary packaging program (up to $18,450 of your salary tax-free).
- The opportunity to use your talents and expertise to make a positive impact around the world.
- We value flexibility and seek to support our people to work in ways that meet their work/life commitments and support their wellbeing.
- Cultural leave
