Job Description

The Opportunity

This is an exciting full-time opportunity for an individual with the knowledge and passion for harness racing to secure a position within the WA Racing Industry. We are currently seeking applications from motivated candidates for the position of Handicapper/Judge in the harness code.

Reporting to the Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects, you will be responsible for delivering the effective administration and strategic delivery of harness racing operations across Western Australia. It ensures the effective delivery of race meeting allocation, race scheduling and programming in accordance with the Rules of Harness Racing and RWWA Board directives. Working closely with the Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects, the role contributes to the development and implementation of race programming strategies for metropolitan, provincial, country, and community race clubs. It also plays an active role in contributing to shaping the strategic direction of harness racing to ensure alignment with broader operational and business goals. In addition, the role assists in performing the harness judge function at RWWA, being rostered as required in the capacity of judge/photo finish operator at various harness meets and trials. Some of the tasks & duties include:

  • Provide assistance and input to enable the harness code racing operations throughout WA to operate efficiently and effectively for the benefit of all stakeholders having regard to the Rules of Harness Racing and RWWA Board policies and directions

  • Contribute to reviews of policy for harness racing handicapping and programming

  • Keep abreast of developments throughout Australia with a view to improving RWWA's handicapping rules, racing policies and race programming.

  • In conjunction with Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects and Harness Team members, develop and contribute to race programming and the race meeting allocation strategy.

  • Oversee delivery of race programmes for all metropolitan, provincial, country and community Race Clubs in a timely manner

  • Perform the role of judge/photo finish operator at harness meets and trials as directed and required.

Qualifications

About you

  • Experience and knowledge in the areas of handicapping, judging, race programming and racing services functions

  • The ability to liaise effectively with both external and internal clients

  • Knowledge of general handicapping policies and procedures

  • Knowledge of Rules of Harness Racing and relevant local rules

  • Knowledge and understanding of the racing and wagering industry

  • Well developed communication, negotiating and interpersonal skills

  • Well developed problem solving and analytical skills within the scope of the position's responsibilities

  • Well developed numeracy and attention to detail skills

  • Ability to prioritise and control workload

  • Ability to work as part of a team, with or without supervision

  • Sound computer literacy skills – Microsoft Office / Windows environment
