Primary objective
To proactively and responsively develop the Library and Archives NT collections through the identification, selection and
acquisition of published and unpublished materials in a range of formats, with a particular focus on contemporary and
heritage collections related to the Northern Territory.
Context statement
Library and Archives NT is the is the premier public research library and archival organisation of the Northern Territory,
dedicated to creating connections with and for communities, and serving as a trusted steward of Territory memory and
history. Its collections include NT Government archives, books, newspapers, photographs, maps, magazines, ephemera,
websites, letters, diaries, community and organisational records, and oral histories.
Library and Archives NT is a branch of the Northern Territory Government's Department of People, Sport and Culture.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the identification, selection and acquisition of contemporary and heritage documentary materials to build and
develop the Library and Archives NT collections.
2. Provide high-level, expert subject matter advice to senior management on collection development policies, collecting
strategies, practices and priorities; and represent Library and Archives NT in relevant professional forums as required.
3. Establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with external stakeholders, including collection donors, First
Nations cultural authorities and communities, community and historical organisations, vendors, and other collecting
institutions.
- Contribute to the activation, interpretation and promotion of Library and Archives NT collections as required.
Lead, support, and develop the Collection Development Team to achieve objectives and deliver business unit outcomes.
Work collaboratively across the organisation to develop and refine collection workflows that improve discoverability,
access and public engagement with the collections.
7. Oversee the management and administration of collection development records, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A tertiary qualification relating to the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector, with eligibility for the
relevant professional membership.
2. High-level professional knowledge of contemporary practices in the development of cultural collections such as library
and archival collections, and an understanding of the role cultural collecting institutions play in preserving and sharing
diverse stories of place and culture.
- Extensive experience in managing the identification, selection and acquisition of collection materials, including
significance assessment, rights and access agreements, workflows and complex documentation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of rights management, including Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) and its
relevance to collection development.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with donors, community organisations, vendors,
researchers and other collecting institutions.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to lead and motivate staff to achieve objectives and manage change in a dynamic
environment.
High-level written and verbal communications skills.
Demonstrated project management skills, including budgeting and financial oversight.
