About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have a unique opportunity for a Senior Community Engagement Officer to work as part of the Policy and Engagement Branch and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

As a Senior Community Engagement Officer, you will be responsible for managing the development, coordination, implementation and review of strategies, projects, programs and activities to establish and maintain effective community and stakeholder engagement programs to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of natural and cultural heritage conservation.

You will work with a great team of community engagement professionals and lead community engagement that supports conservation of our biodiversity and Aboriginal heritage and provide world class visitor experiences for the whole community to enjoy. You will have a chance to work with NPWS colleagues across the state to develop and extend good engagement practice.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, stakeholder management experience, sound judgement and attention to detail. Experience facilitating challenging community workshops and dealing with highly contentious and sensitive issues will be highly regarded.

You will bring enthusiasm and a people centred approach. The role requires a supportive and collaborative style to work with the team and work closely with our stakeholders and the broader NPWS business. Experience leading or mentoring staff would be valuable. The role is diverse and changeable; adaptability and flexibility are key. Behaviour change experience would also be well-regarded.

Essential requirements

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant working experience in a related industry.
  • Strong experience managing, planning and delivering community engagement programs, strategies and initiatives including facilitating meetings, workshops and community engagement events across a broad range of issues, some of which will be contentious.
  • High level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including experience in developing clear and concise advice in the form of briefings, community engagement plans and reports on complex issues.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing skills including proven ability to exercise sound judgement in facilitating stakeholder engagement.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, as a leader, and as part of a team, exercising initiative and sound judgement.
