 SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation. We do this by undertaking a mix of responsive and proactive programs of work focused on high-risk harms across all industries, aligned to our strategic plan and regulatory priorities. 

SafeWork NSW is undergoing an exciting and important period of transformation as we establish the organisation as a modern, strong and standalone Work Health and Safety Regulator. We're seeking suitably qualified and experienced inspectors who are passionate about safety and the health and wellbeing of workers and their families.

 About the role 

 As an Assistant State Inspector (Electrical) in the Engineering Team, you will be responsible for providing advanced technical information, advice, education and compliance services that contribute as a Specialist in Harm Prevention and improvements in relation to hazardous Electrical, Plant and relevant Structures. 

As a member of a specialist team who respond to complex matters you will: 

  • Provide advanced technical advice regarding safe work practices and how to comply with work health and safety and associated legislation 
  • Actively participate in the identification, planning and delivery of state-wide strategic industry initiatives to address emerging trends and provide input to the national agenda - for example through representation on Australian Standards committees and working with other WHS Regulators on engineering related matters 
  • Regularly facilitate and meet with Industry Associations and attend industry forums where you will represent SafeWork NSW 
  • Conduct workplace visits and complex investigations into workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities involving Electrical incidents, hazardous plant and/or mechanical & electrical safety 
  • Provide advice, guidance, support and dispute resolution to industry, workers and other government agencies on prevention and response matters relating to Electrical engineering discipline 
  • Manage complex technical issues whilst balancing stakeholder interests and ensuring WHS outcomes are achieved and promoted 
  • Conduct research to identify, plan and deliver strategies in relation to the harm prevention strategies

 About you

 To be successful, you will have: 

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering, or similar technical qualifications. 
  • Relevant industry experience in one or more of the following: Electrical system planning or design; Electrical high voltage management; forensic engineering; functional safety, hazardous plant and equipment design or management, electro mechanics, electrical infrastructure, electrical construction design, electrical safety, 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing specialist advice and strategic leadership regarding compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and Electrical engineering codes of practice. 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply Electrical Engineering principles in a work health and safety context  
  • Strong communication skills to proactively engage and influence key stakeholders influence behaviour, undertake change management processes, and lead stakeholder engagements 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Well established resilience skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team 
  • High level written communication skills and an ability to prepare comprehensive SME reports 
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and leading programs or projects of work 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner 
  • Solid knowledge and use of technology

  • Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service  
  • Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $210 per fortnight)  
  • Be able to access flexible working conditions within operational requirements 

Essential requirements 

  • Ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours
  • Hold a NSW 'C' class drivers' licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
  • Undertake the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP). This intensive program is delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks, and extensive on-the-job field training with regular travel throughout NSW. Salary Grade Inspector Consent Award, Assistant State Inspector, with the base salary for this role starting
at $142,691 base plus superannuation
