The Opportunity
As an Environmental Advisor, you'll provide expert advice and technical leadership across a broad range of environmental matters within the Planning and Technical Services directorate of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. Reporting to the Manager, Environment and Heritage, you'll support the delivery of infrastructure and transport services that positively impact South Australians now and into the future.
You'll play a key role in guiding environmental impact assessments, securing approvals, and advising on ecology, air and water quality, heritage, noise, and vibration. Your expertise will ensure that environmental considerations are embedded across planning, construction, operations, and maintenance activities.
Your contribution will be seen through:
- Providing specialist advice on environmental impact assessments and approvals
- Supporting projects with guidance on ecology, heritage, air and water quality, and noise and vibration
- Applying sound environmental management practices aligned with industry standards and legislative requirements
- Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance and sustainability
- Contributing to the development and implementation of environmental policy and procedures across the Department
About You
You're a technically skilled and solutions-focused professional with a strong foundation in environmental management.
You'll demonstrate:
· A minimum of 3 years' experience in environmental management or a directly related field, with technical expertise in areas such as ecology, heritage, air and water quality, noise and vibration, and environmental approvals.
A strong understanding of relevant environmental legislation and government programs, and how these apply to infrastructure planning, delivery, and operations.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly to a variety of audiences, and to review technical reports with confidence and provide sound, high-level recommendations.
A proactive and organised approach, supported by strong judgement, political awareness, and the ability to make informed, balanced decisions—even in complex or sensitive contexts.
Experience managing contracts and coordinating technical investigations, including effective engagement with external suppliers and stakeholders.
Confidence representing the team in collaborative forums, with the initiative to analyse data, interpret policies, and contribute to continuous improvement.
Qualifications
PO2:
- A degree in Engineering (environmental) providing eligibility for graduate membership as a Professional Engineer of the Institution of Engineers, Australia; or
- Appropriate degree in science specialising in one of the following areas: ecology, biology, botany, Environmental Science, is essential.
ASO5:
- A relevant degree or post graduate qualification in the discipline of environmental management or a related discipline is highly desirable.
The following are the technical capabilities required for the role: - Strong discipline knowledge in environmental management or directly related field.
Special Conditions
A National Police Check (NPC) is required prior to employment in the Department for Infrastructure and Transport which must be renewed every three years.
Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.
