Role

Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.

Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.

Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.

Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.

Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1. Purpose of the Role

  • Lead all operational and strategic aspects of the relevant Learning Area, with a focus on curriculum quality, student outcomes, and staff development.
  • Implement and monitor an action plan to support growth, student retention, and improved academic performance.

2. Curriculum Leadership

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum within the Learning Area.
  • Promote and model best practice in differentiated teaching and learning strategies.
  • Coordinate curriculum development across the College and ensure alignment with whole-school priorities.
  • Prepare and maintain course outlines for all subjects and year levels.
  • Ensure that assessment and reporting processes are consistent with college policy.

3. Staff Development and Support

  • Participate in the induction, allocation, and professional development of staff within the Learning Area.
  • Lead Learning Area-based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support ongoing professional growth.
  • Mentor new teachers and support the transition of staff new to the Learning Area.

4. Resource and Budget Management

  • Oversee the maintenance and development of teaching spaces and resources within the Learning Area.
  • Prepare and manage the Learning Area budget in consultation with faculty members.
  • Advise the Principal ¿ Resources on furniture, equipment, and maintenance needs.
  • Liaise with Teacher Librarians regarding library and audio-visual resources.
  • Provide input into the selection of textbooks and materials for the College booklists.

5. Organisational and Operational Responsibilities

  • Coordinate teaching activities within the Learning Area and collaborate with other faculties on cross-disciplinary programs.
  • Provide recommended teaching allotments to the Assistant Principal ¿ Timetabler.
  • Ensure appropriate lesson plans are available for use by Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs).
  • Ensure College policies and DET guidelines are followed in planning excursions, including approval processes, attendance thresholds, and arrangements for non-participating students.
  • Ensure classrooms and facilities are maintained to create a positive teaching and learning environment.

6. VCE/VET/Vocational Major Responsibilities

  • Appoint a verification contact for each VCE/VET/VM subject.
  • Ensure accurate VASS data entry and compliance with all VCAA accountability requirements.

7. Student Support and Inclusion

  • Work with the Literacy/Numeracy Learning Specialists to identify students at risk.
  • Support the development of modified programs in consultation with classroom teachers to meet individual student needs.

8. Communication and Meetings

  • Convene regular Learning Area meetings, maintain records, and communicate updates to staff.
  • Contribute to school-wide events such as curriculum days, Open Night, and information evenings.
  • Liaise with staff, leadership, and external stakeholders to promote the subject area within the College.

9. Strategic and School-Wide Contributions

  • Participate actively in the implementation of the School Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan.
  • Provide content for the School Council Annual Report, College Self-Evaluation, Review, and Strategic Planning documents.
  • Contribute articles, photos, and information for the College magazine.
  • Ensure high-level compliance with the Child Safe Standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Somerville Secondary College is situated in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula in the township of Somerville, 55 km from Melbourne¿s central business district.
