Primary objective

Occupational Therapists work with within a Multi-tiered System of Support framework to build capability of educators to support students

to maximise their educational outcomes. Occupational Therapists perform environmental assessments with students using observation

and interviews with parents and teachers to plan and implement interventions for students with movement and sensory processing

concerns that may be having a direct impact on educational outcomes.

Context statement

Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Programs and Services (SWIPS) is part of Inclusion and Engagement Services, which provides

differentiated support services to reform inclusion and improve engagement and access to learning for children, students and communities.

SWIPS provides advice, guidance and support to clients and stakeholders to ensure all children and students are welcomed into an inclusive

learning environment and are able to engage effectively with education and learn to their full potential.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Deliver occupational therapy services within and across regional teams under the supervision of more experienced or senior

occupational therapists.

2. Support student, student groups, whole class and whole school approaches through environmental occupational therapy assessments

and staff capacity building, under the supervision of a more experienced or senior occupational therapist.

1. Participate in the delivery of evidence based Professional Learning sessions provided by SWIPS multidisciplinary teams and in response

to Requests for Service.

4. Ensure adherence to the legislations, policy frameworks, guidelines and practice standards and maintain accurate record utilising the

department databases.

1. Participate in continuous quality improvement and service development activities at a local level to ensure delivery of contemporary

occupational therapy services.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Relevant qualifications in Occupational Therapy and registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Australian Health Practitioner

Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

2. Demonstrated knowledge providing a variety of occupational therapy services appropriate for individual and group level intervention

for children and young people with disabilities.

1. Ability to work independently within defined parameters and in collaboration with colleagues in a multidisciplinary team to provide

support to schools on a range of occupational therapy issues impacting on educational outcomes.

4. Demonstrated organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and plan and proven ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

5. Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse professional, cultural and

linguistic backgrounds, which includes ethnic, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

6. Ability to provide professional learning and information to educators and leaderships teams in collaboration with team members.

7. Knowledge of continuous quality improvement strategies.

Desirable

1. Experience in the use of office-based computer programs and databases.

The selected applicant must hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card) or ability to obtain.

Corporate-based conditions apply to this position. Visits to remote schools may necessitate travel by 4x4 vehicle on unsealed roads or

light aircraft and include overnight stays in remote communities of up to four days. Four-wheel drive training will be provided by the NT

Department of Education and Training.

2. Collaborate with Professional Practice Leaders and work across multidisciplinary teams to inform practice standards, facilitate place-based

decision making and ensure cohesive and place-based service delivery. This includes participating in the assessment of service requests from

intake through to allocation and service delivery planning for schools.

1. Support student, student group, whole class and whole school approaches through environmental occupational therapy assessments and

staff capacity building to develop movement and sensory processing competencies.

1. Support the delivery of evidence based Professional Learning sessions provided by SWIPS multidisciplinary teams and in response to

Requests for Service.

1. Strong organisational skills with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and commitment and drive to persist and achieve desired

1. Facilitation skills and ability to provide professional learning and information to educators and leaderships teams in collaboration with other

1. Postgraduate qualifications or experience in clinical education, leadership / management, specialty practice area or another relevant field.
