About This Role

This is not your average CFO job. As a Fractional CFO at Planet Startup, you'll take the reins across a portfolio of high- growth SaaS and tech clients – bringing financial clarity, commercial strategy and systems thinking to the table.

You'll lead technical delivery, guide capital strategy, and serve as the go-to-financial partner for founders scaling from $1m to $20m+ in revenue. From bookkeeping to boardrooms, your work will shape the trajectory of some of the country's most exciting companies.

This role is perfect for someone who loves operating at the intersection of strategy, numbers and ambition – and wants to help build the most trusted CFO firm in Australia.

Key Responsibilities

Technical CFO Delivery

Own and deliver high quality financial outcomes across your client portfolio:

• Build and manage dynamic financial models, forecast and pricing frameworks,
• Lead monthly reporting: custom board packs, dashboards and performance insights
• Oversee cash flow, banking relationships and capital allocation,
• Manage end-to-end financial processes (bookkeeping to boardroom)

Strategic Leadership

Be the trusted adviser founders turn to when it matters most:

• Advise on capital raising, burn runway, investor comms and board governance,
• Guide clients through budgeting, business model design, and growth levers,
• Identity opportunities to automate, streamline and scale financial systems (especially with AI),
• Collaborate with internal term leads to deliver a joined-up client experience.

Team Culture

Strengthen the firm from the inside out:

• Mentor and develop our Finance Managers and outsourced support staff,
• Lead continuous improvement in delivery frameworks, tools and standards,
• Help shape Planet Startup's growth, culture and strategic direction

About You

You're a sharp operator with startup finance in your blood. You're just as comfortable in spreadsheets as you are in the boardroom – and you love helping founders win.

Requirements

• CA or CPA qualified with 3 – 5 years in finance,
• Deep experience with SaaS or VC-backed startups,
• Advanced Xero & Excel/financial modelling abilities
• Strong communicator who can lead clients with clarity and confidence,
• Detail obsessed and always pushing for better
• Leadership experience - formal or informal, with the desire to growth others
• Thrive in a fast-paced, founder first environment.

Bonus Points for

• Prior fractional CFO, VC or startup advisory experience,
• Experience with R&D tax, cap tables, or board reporting,
• Recent public practice/accounting firm experience, and
• Exposure to AI tools, and automated finance workflows
