Head of AI
Lead AI and Data for technology that saves lives. We're an Australian, remote‑first company building risk management and fatality‑prevention software for high‑risk industries. Our platform helps organisations identify hazards earlier, act decisively, and protect their people.
The Role
As Head of AI/Data, you will lead leaders across AI/ML, Data Engineering, and Data Science to deliver AI‑powered product capabilities and transform data into measurable business outcomes. You'll own the AI/Data strategy and portfolio, set governance for data quality and MLOps, embed Responsible AI, and represent AI/Data with customers and the executive team. You will champion AI‑augmented ways of working—including agentic workflows and copilots (e.g., Cursor, Copilot)—to lift velocity and quality at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and communicate a multi‑year AI/Data strategy and a prioritised portfolio tied to product and commercial outcomes.
- Govern delivery through outcome‑based OKRs, investment cases, and quarterly portfolio reviews; unblock systemic issues (not task‑level execution).
- Oversee data platform and MLOps standards: data governance, lineage, quality SLAs, feature management, model registry, training/serving pipelines, and observability.
- Institutionalise Responsible AI practices (risk assessment, explainability, bias monitoring, human‑in‑the‑loop) and ensure auditability for safety‑sensitive contexts.
- Build, develop, and retain high‑performing managers and principal talent; set the hiring bar and operating rhythms for a remote Australian organisation.
- Establish strategic partnerships with cloud/data/AI vendors and research groups; represent AI/Data with customers and executives.
- Qualifications & Experience (Must‑Have)
- 10+ years across data/AI/engineering with significant leadership over managers and senior ICs in SaaS or platform environments.
- Proven record of shipping ML to production with measurable outcomes (adoption, accuracy, revenue/retention, cost efficiency).
- Executive‑level command of modern data/AI architectures and MLOps—able to make portfolio and governance decisions at the right altitude.
- Responsible‑AI and privacy/security leadership in compliance‑ or safety‑sensitive contexts.
- Experience institutionalising AI copilot/agentic workflows across analytics/ML engineering with measurable productivity/quality uplift.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder influence across technical and non‑technical audiences (customers, execs, board‑level).
Highly Regarded (Nice‑to‑Have)
- HSE / safety domain experience and partnership with safety leaders or regulators.
- Monetising data through data products, risk analytics, or embedded AI features in SaaS.
- Vendor ecosystem leadership (cloud, data, and AI tooling) and cost‑to‑serve optimisation.
- AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty or Google Professional Data Engineer.
- DAMA CDMP or IAPP/CIPT.
How We Work
Remote within Australia. Mission‑driven and outcome‑focused. Competitive salary; strong support for professional development. Australian work rights required.
