Western Cape College is seeking a suitably qualified Science Technician from a highly motivated person with proven practical skills. This role involves ensuring compliance with safety regulations, managing chemical and equipment inventories, and contributing to the efficient operation of the science
department. This is a temporary full-time position for a period of 12 months, unless otherwise determined.

This is a progressional position as per the Role Description. The successful applicant will be appointed to the lower classification with eligibility for progression to the next, once specific criteria have been met or demonstrated. Please note salary rate shown is reflective of both classification ranges.

About the Role:

As the Science Technician you will contribute to the effective and efficient management of the school science department by providing administration and technical support to the respective Head of Department, teachers and laboratory staff of the school science department. You will work independently within general directions and instructions, performing responsible tasks associated with the efficient operation of the school science department.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to;

  • Laboratory Preparation & Support: Prepare and set up materials, equipment, and demonstrations for science lessons; prepare chemical solutions, maintain teaching and preparation laboratories, and ensure resources are ready for practical use.
  • Safety & Compliance: Safely manage chemical handling, waste disposal, and laboratory operations in accordance with departmental guidelines, SOPs, and WHS regulations, ensuring a clean, secure, and hazard-free environment.
  • Equipment & Resource Management: Maintain, calibrate, and repair laboratory equipment; manage inventory systems for materials and apparatus; and record usage to support efficient departmental operations.
  • Teaching & STEM Support: Assist teaching staff with demonstrations, student instruction, and STEM-related activities; provide technical advice to enhance practical learning and promote engagement in science pathways.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Apply problem-solving skills to develop maintenance procedures, improve laboratory processes, and contribute to innovative practices that enhance learning outcomes and departmental effectiveness.
