Primary objective
Implement environmental impact assessment of development proposals in accordance with the Environment Protection Act 2019
(EP Act) and Environment Protection Regulations 2020. Investigate and contribute to the development of environmental protection
policies and strategies related to such development.
Context statement
The Environmental Assessment Unit conducts environmental impact assessment functions of the Northern Territory Environment
Protection Authority (NT EPA) and prepares Ministerial environmental approvals under the EP Act.
Key duties and responsibilities
Identify and assess risks and potential environmental impacts associated with simple development proposals and contribute
to impact assessment of complex development proposals.
Contribute to the preparation of high-quality environmental and scientific advice for the NT EPA, government agencies and
proponents on the potential environmental impacts associated with development proposals, and protection measures and
standards applied to development activities.
3. Assist with the preparation of briefings, reports and other material on environmental matters within required timeframes.
Liaise with NT Government agencies and development proponents to ensure advice and recommendations for environmental
protection safeguards and standards are accurately translated and incorporated into conditions of approval for development
proposals.
5. Represent the Environment Division by interacting and liaising effectively with proponents, government agencies and
consultants about development proposals.
Selection criteria
Essential
Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, natural resource management or a related field from a recognised academic
institution.
Experience in environmental impact assessment or a related field.
Demonstrated sound oral and written communication skills, including ability to deal appropriately and effectively with
proponents and government agencies.
Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and interpret complex, technical information and make accurate conclusions based
on evidence to inform decision-makers.
Desirable
Knowledge of legislation related to environment protection or environmental impact assessment.
Knowledge and understanding of current NT and national environmental policies.
