The Women's Children's and Family Health Service aims to support safe nurturing environments for pregnant women, infants and children, increase uptake and utilisation of services with an emphasis on early intervention and prevention, provide streamlined coordinated care and positive experiences for clients to encourage continued engagement with services.

Job Description

Working under the broad direction of the Maternal Child Health Team Manager, the primary role of the Midwife is and not limited to:

  • Provide proficient coordinated, safe and effective antenatal and postnatal care under a Shared Care arrangement with Nunkuwarrin Yunti GPs, health counselling and primary health care to women and their families, in partnership with the Aboriginal Health Practitioners/Workers, GPs and Birthing Hospitals in accordance with best practice standards and guidelines in accordance Scope of Practice
  • Plan, implement and coordinate appropriate service delivery options including those of other disciplines or agencies as required to meet woman and infant health care needs
  • Coordinate and participate in home visiting where appropriate.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of care within the team and act to resolve local and/or immediate midwifery care or service delivery problems
  • Demonstrate and promote an approach to practice that supports the implementation and maintenance of systems to protect clients and staff
  • Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence from a range of sources and own experience to devise and achieve agreed client care outcomes
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement and change management processes
  • Contribute to effective multi-disciplinary teams, communication processes and staff development

  • Provide leadership and ongoing professional development of an Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Care and/or Aboriginal Health Practitioner Workforce

  • In consultation with the Maternal Child Health Team Manager, contribute to the planning and evaluation of maternity services using information systems to inform decision making, evaluate outcomes and processes for quality improvement and change management processes.
  • Provide proficient caseload midwifery care to clients:
  • In line with Nunkuwarrin Yunti's Shared Care model of care for maternity services coordinate and lead day to day service systems and processes to ensure seamless continuity of antenatal and postnatal care
  • Work within a partnership framework to promote women's full participation in their health care and allowing them to make informed life decisions
  • Deliver antenatal and postnatal care including though outreach and home visiting to maximise access to services for women having an Aboriginal baby
  • Identify and appropriately refer women in line with National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral (e.g. complicated pregnancies, postnatal complications and health problems in newborn infants)
  • Where situations arise that indicate a need for medical involvement, work collaboratively with colleagues to coordinate the best care for mother and baby.
  • In partnership with the Aboriginal Maternal Infant Carers /Aboriginal Health Practitioners/Workers design and provide culturally appropriate health education programs and groups for pregnant women and their families.
  • Facilitate internal and external referral and ongoing engagement with a range of social and specialist services as needed.
  • Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of systems to protect clients and staff
Desired Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent qualification, and/or relevant experience in learning and development.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and the issues impacting their communities.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Strong skills in presenting data and producing clear reports with actionable recommendations.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to build relationships across diverse groups.
  • Competence in using software such as ELMO or student management systems, along with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain professional networks and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Registered as a Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA) Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated vocational experience in a Primary Health Care setting consistent with the position's role and responsibilities

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of quality improvement principles and their application in organisational development.
  • Experience leading individuals or teams to achieve positive outcomes and drive change.
  • Experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service
  • Experience supporting families with complex needs
