The opportunity

Play a vital role in keeping our community safe and sustainable by managing how we deal with contaminated land. This position is all about combining technical know-how with strategic planning and practical solutions. You'll be developing Council's contamination framework, guiding colleagues through complex environmental regulations, or overseeing site investigations and remediation projects. Work closely with internal teams, external experts, and the community to ensure compliance, reduce risks, and deliver outcomes that protect both people and the environment. Make a real difference to the health and future of our municipality in this hands-on role with plenty of variety.

What you'll be doing

• Developing and maintaining Council's land contamination framework, ensuring everything we do meets environmental laws and best practice standards.
• Providing practical advice and support to colleagues dealing with potentially contaminated sites, helping them navigate complex regulations with confidence.
• Overseeing investigations and remediation projects, including managing contractors and ensuring safe, effective solutions for contaminated land.
• Coordinating the monitoring of legacy landfill sites and ensuring reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with all requirements.
• Building strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, keeping everyone informed and engaged while driving positive environmental outcomes.

What you'll need to succeed

• Tertiary qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or a related discipline, backed by hands-on experience in contaminated site and asbestos management.
• Strong knowledge of legislation and policies around contaminated land, plus practical understanding of remediation methods and technologies.
• Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical information for different audiences.
• Proven project and program management capability, including budgeting and financial oversight.
• Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience influencing and negotiating positive outcomes.
