Your next career opportunity

As an Outreach Officer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, you will be responsible for driving the outreach efforts in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, developing, coordinating, and delivering a targeted suite of programs, resources and events for the purpose of promoting mathematics and statistics and facilitating mutually beneficial and sustainable relationships between the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and primary and secondary school students and educators, philanthropic and other external organisations and the general public.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and Coordinate Outreach Programs: Create and implement large-scale national and international programs for primary and secondary school students, promoting mathematics and statistics to underrepresented groups.

  • Collaborate and Engage: Work with academics to develop events and resources showcasing research areas, and liaise with internal and external networks to build sustainable partnerships.

  • Lead and Train: Coordinate and train student outreach ambassadors, actively participate in School meetings, and promote broader participation in outreach activities.

  • Manage Communications and Administration: Oversee project budgets, event staffing, and maintain outreach activity records and metrics.

You may be a great fit if:

You are a passionate communicator with a postgraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, or education, experienced in developing and delivering engaging learning experiences that make complex concepts accessible to diverse audiences.

You may also:

  • Have a proven track record in science communication and presenting at conferences.

  • Possess excellent presentation skills for both face-to-face and virtual workshops.

  • Demonstrate strong project management abilities and strategic thinking.

  • Excel at building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.

  • Have experience in program monitoring and evaluation.

  • Be proficient in relevant software tools and familiar with the Victorian School Curriculum

The University of Melbourne's School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of Australia's leading mathematics and statistics schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students and is involved in aspects of community life that impact on the interests of the School and the discipline.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has a total of 90 continuing teaching and/or research staff; 37 research only staff and consultants; 19 academic specialists and 16 support staff. In 2023, there were 143 Research Higher Degree and 189 Coursework Master of Science students. The School has had 10 staff members inducted as Fellows of the Academy of Science.
