About the team:

The Cancer Information and Support Services Division (CISS) aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one need face cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

The Practical Support Services team provides support to people affected by cancer, ensuring practical needs are met throughout their cancer trajectory. The services offered include pro bono legal and workplace advice, support with accommodation and transport to and from treatment, as well as various types of financial support. These services aim to meet the legal, financial and practical needs of people affected by cancer and contribute to their well-being by reducing stress and improving their quality of life.

About the role:

The key purpose of the Paralegal role is to support the delivery of pro bono professional services to people affected by cancer experiencing legal, financial and workplace issues through Cancer Council's Legal, Financial and Workplace Referral Services.

This role will commence from 12 January 2026, for an 8-month period (finishing August The role could be either full-time or part-time (4 days) depending on the successful candidate.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Legal, Financial & Workplace Referral Services:
  • -Contact clients to assess their legal, financial and/or workplace issues as well as their eligibility for pro bono assistance.
  • -Proactively identify issues and appropriate solutions for clients.
  • -Support with the day-to-day case management of the Legal, Financial and Workplace Referral Services including supporting the Team Leader, Legal, Financial & Workplace Referral Services to maintain key stakeholder relationships including referrers and pro bono service providers.
  • -Assist with service specific projects as required (e.g. service optimisation or research into relevant legal, financial, workplace and/or issues.)
  • Maintain high quality client data and file management in our CRM and support with administrative tasks as required; and any other duties that may be required to meet the needs of the organisation.

About you

Essential:

  • Currently undertaking penultimate or final year tertiary qualification in law or similar degree, or recent law graduate.
  • High level written and oral communication skills.
  • Skills and experience in communicating with vulnerable clients.
  • Capacity to take initiative, problem solve and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills and ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders (both internally and externally).
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Experience in not-for-profit or pro bono sector.
  • Basic knowledge of or interest in oncology, cancer services and the needs of persons affected by cancer.
