Edith Cowan University**Are you ready to belong to a dynamic community where courage, creativity, and optimism are essential elements of our DNA? At ECU we're inspired by the incredible achievements of Edith Cowan, the first woman elected to an Australian parliament and a lifelong champion of education. Empowered by her legacy, we're united in our vision to lead the sector in educational experience and expand our impact through world-class research.

Embrace an opportunity to become part of something extraordinary.The School of Arts and Humanities (SAH) is one of the largest at ECU with many diverse academic disciplines arranged into three main clusters: Creative Humanities; Psychology, Counselling, and Criminology; and Social Sciences, Social Work, and Youth Work. The School operates across four campuses, with more than 100 academic and professional staff, and has a strong online education presence. The diversity of the School is a strength, enabling interdisciplinary innovation, a sustainable financial platform, and many opportunities for collaborations with industry and community. In 2026, the school will begin to operate its Creative Humanities program from our new ECU City Campus while maintaining and expanding operations at the Joondalup and South-West (regional) campuses and building our program at the newly opened ECU Sri Lanka campus. About the Opportunity

We are looking for two talented Social Work academics with innovative perspectives on teaching and research to join our expanding Social Work program.

The School of Arts and Humanities is strengthening its well-established courses and research programs in Social Work, Youth Work, and applied Social Sciences. In 2025, we introduced a highly successful Master of Social Work (already enrolling over 50 new students). In 2026, we will launch a refreshed Bachelor of Community and Human Services with increased social work content, alongside our innovative Masters in Leading Social Change.

This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting growth phase: shaping new courses, contributing to research that advances social justice, and preparing the next generation of caring professionals. We particularly welcome applicants who bring fresh ideas for adapting social work education to the evolving needs of society.

The level of appointment will reflect your experience and achievements in previous academic roles. We welcome both early-career applicants and those seeking to advance their academic careers.

The Role

If appointed, your initial responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching units in Social Work, including in the Master of Social Work and social work components of other degrees.
  • Supporting field education, working alongside our experienced team of academic and professional staff who deliver this crucial element of social work education.

Teaching-Focused Role

If your background aligns most strongly with teaching, you may be appointed to a teaching-focused position, where you will:

  • Concentrate primarily on teaching and field education.
  • Receive support to develop innovations in pedagogy.
  • Play a leading role in preparing and inspiring the next generation of social work professionals.

This pathway particularly suits experienced practitioners eager to step into academia and share their expertise through education.

Teaching and Research Role

If your skills and experience align with a teaching and research position, you will also:

  • Build and develop a strong research program, supported by senior colleagues.
  • Collaborate with research units such as the Program of Research in Migration, Diversity, and Care and the Centre for People, Place, and Planet.
  • Access internal research funding schemes to support your scholarly work.

Whichever pathway you are appointed to, your career will develop to include:

  • Course coordination responsibilities.
  • Leadership in broader areas of scholarly life.
  • Engagement with external partners to expand the impact of your teaching and research.

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be considered for these positions you must be eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. If applying for a teaching and research role, you must hold a PhD (or be about to complete this qualification within 1 year); if applying for a teaching-focused role you must have a Masters' degree and professional experience equivalent to holding a PhD.

You will need to demonstrate, based on past achievement and potential for future development, that you can:

  1. teach effectively with a student-centred approach that facilitates successful learning;
  2. engage productively with industry and community to advance teaching and/or research.
  3. deliver innovations to improve the scholarly experience for students and colleagues;
  4. work productively and collegially to achieve the goals of the school and university.

If applying to take up a teaching and research position you must also demonstrate that you can conduct high-quality research with successful public outcomes and impact, including supervision of students.

It is desirable that you have professional and/or academic experience in one or more of: field education; online learning; and international education.

You will be expected to demonstrate alignment with ECU's values of Integrity, Respect, Rational Inquiry, Personal Excellence, and Courage.
