Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school catering specifically for Aboriginal girls in secondary years of schooling. An Aboriginal initiative, the College is owned and governed by Aboriginal people and operates on a philosophy of 'Walking Together to Make a Difference'. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from urban, regional and remote Aboriginal communities across the country where Aboriginal language/s is and culture is embedded. Worawa Aboriginal College provides a holistic education based on an integrated Education, Culture, and Wellbeing model.

The Worawa curriculum strongly emphasises foundation studies in literacy and numeracy while providing a breadth and depth of learning experiences across all key disciplines/learning areas. The Gananggurr pedagogy model is based on the Aboriginal values of Relationship, Responsibility, Respect and Rigour that inform all aspects of College operations. Along with the core academic program, emphasis is placed on nurturing and celebrating Aboriginal culture as a crucial aspect of student self-esteem and wellbeing.

Reporting to the Head of Learning and Teaching, Worawa are seeking experienced Teachers who would like to work on a casual basis.

These positions require the incumbents to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.

The successful candidate/s must have:

  • A minimum Bachelor level qualification in Education/Teaching, and have full VIT registration
  • Sound computer skills, an understanding of the Compass student management is advantageous
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal society and an ability to communicate sensitively with Indigenous Australians
  • Knowledge of government policy in relation to 'Closing the Gap' and Aboriginal–led initiatives aimed at improving Aboriginal education outcomes.
  • Strong and versatile teaching skills and be able to adapt the teaching program to suit the needs of each student including EAL/D.
  • Working knowledge of Child Safety, Mandatory Reporting and Duty of Care requirements
  • Ability to work in a co-led model with Aboriginal people demonstrating and an ability to develop relationships with the breadth of staff at Worawa and external stakeholders
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willing to obtain)

Desirable:

  • Experience or willingness to teach VCE and/or VCAL would be advantageous
  • Current Certificate IV Training and Assessment
  • Experience teaching Aboriginal students
