About the Daily Beast
Based in New York with reporters across the world, the Daily Beast delivers award-winning original reporting and sharp opinions from big personalities in the arenas of politics, pop culture, world news, and more. Fiercely independent and armed with irreverent intelligence, the Daily Beast now reaches more than 20 million readers per month. The Daily Beast is an operating business of IAC (NASDAQ: IAC).
Job Description
Are you a news junkie? Do you thrive on MAGA meltdowns and the world of 'White Lotus'? The Daily Beast is expanding its global weekend team to deliver breaking news at its fastest–and we're looking for journalists with a taste for Trump and a fixation with Fox.
The Australian office is expanding, and we're seeking experienced breaking news reporters to help deliver news to our U.S. and global audiences around the clock.
The ideal candidates are all-rounders with a particular taste for U.S. politics, as well as global news, media and pop culture. You have a deep understanding of American culture, preferably having lived in the U.S., or a track record of working for American publications. If you know who Marjorie Taylor Greene is, or if you can't stop scrolling through the Epstein files drama, this is the job for you.
We are recruiting reporters to help cover the weekends across the United States. You will be required to work Saturday and Sunday daytime hours in Australia; however, flexibility may also be required at times. Starting times will vary depending on the season, but range between 8 a.m.-11 a.m. AEST.
You must be based outside of the U.S. to apply. The role is work from home but may change as the Beast expands operations. You do not have to be based in Sydney for the role. Finalists will be required to undertake a copy and headline test.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and pitch stories that matter to our audience and write intelligent, exciting copy with a punchy attitude that separates us from other outlets.
- Collaborate with editors and other reporters to ensure comprehensive coverage and bring fresh ideas and angles that can further a story.
- Produce clean, concise and accurate copy in a breaking news environment that requires a fast pace and can-do attitude.
- Be able to locate original sources for stories and be comfortable making calls, creating sources and conducting interviews if necessary.
- You feel at home picking up new CMS and other systems to better the reader experience.
- Be comfortable writing across a variety of topics including U.S. politics, world news, entertainment, sport, media and weather.
- Be across multiple zones to effectively communicate with the global team.
- Identify and download video to add to your story.
- Identify news outlets worthy of checking for scoops on shift.
- Be fluent across various social media platforms.
- An understanding of the Daily Beast's voice and dynamic tone.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in news reporting, preferably online.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to work under tight deadlines and specific targets.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Why Join Us?
- Be part of a respected and influential news organization.
- Engage with a dedicated audience passionate about political news.
- Enjoy a collaborative and fast-paced work environment.
- Opportunity for career progression at home or beyond.
- Location is flexible via remote work.
Shift rate
$500 AUD per shift
