About the team

The Women's Mental Health Service consists of 2 full-time psychiatry Registrars, several consultant psychiatrists, consultation-liaison mental health clinicians and clinical psychologists. It provides a comprehensive psychiatry consultation-liaison service, and outpatient perinatal and gynaecology service as well as a WADS (addiction in pregnancy) service. There is ongoing teaching and mentoring for stage 3 registrars wanting experience in consultation-liaison, perinatal, women's mental health, and psychotherapy.

About the role

The consultation-liaison psychiatrist will contribute to the provision of an effective and efficient consultation liaison psychiatry service to meet the needs of women who are inpatients or outpatients of RWH who have mental health problems.

A regular day will see you:

Provide a consultation-liaison perinatal service to women with mental health problems who are inpatients or outpatients of the Women's e.g. assessment and management of antenatal and postnatal patients, gynaecology, oncology and other women's health patients, and involvement with NICU families.

Work with other staff/units of RWH and provide advice, consultation, and support to assist in the care of women with mental health problems.

Contribute to the provision of teaching in women's mental health to undergraduate students.

Participate in the delivery of education and training for staff at RWH regarding women's mental health to our maternity and gynaecology colleagues medical, midwifery and nursing.

Participate in service development and improvement activities.

About you

We are ideally looking for consultation-liaison/perinatal psychiatrist who can work autonomously and escalate clinical issues to the team/clinical lead as appropriate. The consultation-liaison setting requires good interpersonal skills and ability to de-escalate patients as well as contain staff anxieties surround challenging patients.

You will bring with you:

  • Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists OR equivalent postgraduate specialist qualification OR Psychiatry Fellow at end of their training
  • Experience in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry & Women's Mental Health
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in the development of effective working relationships with consumers and carers
  • Knowledge of evidence-based guidelines relevant to the provision of Perinatal and Women's mental health services
