About the role
Mater Hospitals Brisbane, Springfield and Mothers are currently seeking a Clinical Coding Optimisation Officer and a Forensic Coding Officer to join our team in these permanent, full-time position based at South Brisbane.
The Clinical Coding Optimisation and Forensic Coding Officers will be responsible for conducting coding optimisation and targeted improvement activities, with a focus on engaging effectively with key leadership and clinical stakeholders across these hospitals. The role works closely with Clinical Documentation Specialists and the Optimisation Projects team to develop, implement and evaluate clinical coding accuracy and improvement initiatives, aimed at timely DRG optimisation.
Salary range: $ $67.20 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits
What you'll be doing
The key responsibilities of the role include (but not limited to):
- Perform concurrent review of clinical documentation for targeted cases, including audits to clarify diagnoses and procedures and validate DRG assignment
- Identify opportunities to optimise coding and identify missed revenue opportunities associated with clinical documentation, coding and DRG allocation
- Continuously improve coding accuracy through coding optimisation activities
- Support initiatives that foster clinician engagement to enhance real-time, high quality clinical documentation for improved coding and DRG outcomes
- Collaborate with the Clinical Coding Service to address documentation deficits impacting the coding process
- Conduct data analysis related to coding and DRG data
- Collaborate with coding advisory bodies to find solutions for challenging coding scenarios and queries
- Maintain a register of review activities and provide monthly reports to the Director of Business Services
- Stay updated on changes in clinical practice that may affect patient complexity
- Assist in developing educational materials and resources related to clinical documentation and coding data
About you
The successful candidate must have completion of approved medical terminology and have advanced clinical coding qualifications in addition to the following skills, experience and qualifications:
- Completion of an advanced clinical coding qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or equivalent (Desirable)
- Advanced ability and competent use of ICD-10-AM classification system for accurate clinical coding
- Experience in clinical coding within an acute hospital setting, preferably in both public and private sectors and with experience in obstetrics and complex neonates
- Advanced knowledge and application of Australian Coding Standards
- Strong understanding of inpatient funding, hospital Casemix, and Diagnosis Related Groups
- Ability to efficiently conduct clinical coding audits, analyse results, and provide recommendations
- Track record in escalating new opportunities or missed prevalence
- High proficiency in using information systems and software, including patient administration systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills for effective collaboration with staff at all levels
