POSITION DESCRIPTION:

FULL-TIME Youth Minister

Reporting to:

Parish Priest/Administrator

The Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to connect with the youth of the Parish, develop structured groups that involve youth in Parish activities, and to implement strategies that address the ongoing needs of youth in the Parish.

A key aim of the Youth Minister is to liaise and consult with youth groups which operate within the Parish, outreach to Parish-linked primary and secondary schools, and providing a role-model for youth in the Parish.

To achieve this, the Youth Minister will be required to work in close consultation with the Parish Priest and the youth to set up structured groups that caters for the broad spectrum of youth ages.

In addition, the youth minister will also be involved in providing Catholic scripture in the State Schools within the boundaries of the Parish, to encourage and foster in the children the practice of their Catholic faith, and to make these children feel inclusive in the Parish community.

The youth minister will be required to take catechist classes when required.

Responsibilities
:

The Youth Minister is accountable to the Parish Priest for:

Liaising and consulting with youth groups which operate within the Parish.

Identifying pastoral and other needs of youth within the Parish, communicating these needs to the Parish Priest and Parish Pastoral Associate, and recommending strategies to address these needs.

Working with Parish youth to set up and run structured youth groups.

Implementing strategies to address the needs of youth in consultation with the Parish Priest.

Outreaching to Parish-linked primary and secondary schools.

Visiting Schools in the Parish, both Catholic and Public, enthuse Catholic students about the Sacrament of Reconciliation and organising students to meet with a Priest or a Spiritual Director as per their request.

Promote the Catholic Inquiry (RCIA) program for young people, particularly to those young lapsed Catholics.

The Youth Minister should also be able to propose and discuss possible Social Justice Ministry Programs and Evangelisation Programs for the youth.

Providing a role-model for Catholic youth in the Parish.

Utilising resources of other Catholic (or Christian) agencies to support and promote youth activities within the Parish.

Take the weekly catechist classes in the following State Primary Schools.

Encouraging and fostering in the children as far as possible, the practice of their Catholic faith both within and beyond the classroom.

Reporting progress against objectives to the Parish Priest on a regular basis.

  • Other duties from time-to-time as requested by the Parish Priest.

Inter-relationships:

The Youth Minister interacts with the following persons and groups:

  • Parish Priests and the Parish Team by maintaining relationships with key contacts so as to be informed of Parish events and happenings, and to make State School pupils feel included in the Parish community.
  • Parish Priest and School Principals in matters of extraordinary pupil behaviour and conduct as well as matters of welfare and those covered in the Child Protection Act of NSW.

Qualifications and Experience:

The ideal Youth Minister will have:

Relevant experience in a similar role such as Youth Work, Parish Ministry, or Education.

Experience in being part of and working with youth groups.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Experience in facilitating, networking and coordinating people.

Demonstrated commitment to youth and a willingness to be accountable for their performance.

Demonstrated commitment to the ethos and values of the Catholic Church.

Current Driver's Licence and own transport.

Demonstrated commitment to student services and a willingness to be accountable for their performance.

Performance Management:

The performance of the Youth Minister will be assessed on a regular basis by the Parish Priest having regard to:

  • Successful outcomes of the major accountabilities of the role

Achievement of the agreed objectives under limited supervision

  • Service levels and the level of satisfaction expressed by key stakeholders

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Tertiary studies in
    Theology, Ministry, Religious Education, or a related field.

$67,000 – $75,000 per year
