Sydney CBD New South Wales Australia Open Group Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

Data @ Open

At Open, we exist because we believe that Insurance is fundamentally an information and data business. Creating technology so that our customers can enjoy intuitive insurance experiences based on smart use of information and data is at the core of Open.

Our Data team thrive on solving problems to revolutionise insurance and have a 'no excuses' attitude when it comes to putting our customers first. Our high performing team specialise in Python, Snowflake, dbt and the latest AWS tools that represent the frontier of data capability. An approach to data innovation was featured by Snowflake – showcasing how Open brings self-service data to life at scale.

What you'll do

We're seeking a curious, proactive problem solver to join our team as an Associate Data Engineer. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional to help build, improve, and scale Open's data platform and pipelines that power smart decisions across the company.

You'll work closely with senior data engineers, analysts, and product managers to ensure our data systems are accurate, reliable, and performant – and that Open's data continues to be a source of truth that drives innovation and growth.

In this role, you will:

  • Help monitor and improve data quality through checks, alerts, and documentation.
  • Contribute to Open's data warehouse architecture and ensure consistent data standards and definitions.
  • Support data ingestion, transformation, and loading processes that power analytics and machine learning.
  • Build, test, and maintain efficient and reliable data pipelines, data models using Python, SQL (DBT), and AWS tools.
  • Enable AI-driven insights by ensuring Open's data is structured, high-quality, and ready for model training and experimentation
  • Participate in code reviews and learn best practices for data engineering at scale.Support data governance and compliance initiatives to ensure data is secure, accurate,
  • and regulatory-ready.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams of designers, engineers and data scientists, and be closely mentored by a Principal Data Engineer who leads data engineering at Open.

What you'll bring

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a relentless curiosity and high attention to detail.
  • Expert-level SQL and intermediate-level Python.
  • Solid understanding of data concepts such as Databases, ETL/ELT, data modelling, and APIs.
  • Exposure to cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills — you'll work cross-functionally with multiple teams.
  • Driven by tenacity and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • 1–2 years of professional experience or relevant technical projects (internships welcome).
  • Insurance, fintech, or SaaS experience is a plus but not essential.

This role is great for:

  • Early-career professionals passionate about understanding the world through data, and excited to build data systems and infrastructure that support this
  • Recent graduates with a strong technical foundation who want to learn data engineering in a modern cloud environment.
  • Junior engineers interested in the intersection of data, analytics, and technology-driven decision making.

This role may be less suited if:

  • You prefer to work in a highly structured environment, as in this role, every day will be a new adventure
  • You cannot demonstrate your passion for coding and data analysis through recent personal, academic or professional work. We're looking for someone with this passion as this role will see you take on some of Open's most challenging data questions.

Role location

This role will be based in Sydney, with a hybrid working model (minimum 2–3 days in office, e.g. Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays).

Why Open?

Open is on a mission to make it easy for everyone to get the best priced insurance. Insurance is one of the world's least digitally mature industries – for years it's remained confusing, paper-based and heavily intermediated. We launched in 2016 to build a global, AI-powered platform that digitises the entire insurance process, making it transparent, less costly and more reliable.

It's an exciting time to join Open and be part of a tech scale-up. We provide our team with:

  • Highly competitive compensation, including share options – we believe in paying people what they're worth and having everyone in our company share in our success
  • High levels of autonomy and trust so you can do your best work
  • Growth opportunities internally – as you grow, your role can too
  • Flexible working – we are about impact, not time at your desk.
  • We encourage freedom and responsibility, including the ability to work from anywhere
  • Annual allowance for professional development – use it for professional coaching, a skills course, or an industry conference.

More about us

Open is an AI-powered platform transforming insurance globally – making it more transparent, cost-effective and customer friendly. Since launching in 2016, we've grown into a certified B Corporation, using business as a force for good.

We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer that celebrates diversity and are committed to providing an inclusive environment for all employees.

Lastly, Open is a high-performing team that strives to achieve brilliant things every day and we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't exactly match the job description. We're looking for people who are intellectually curious, courageous, innovative and passionate. Our culture is truly open, we're continuously challenging each other to live our values, and aren't afraid to raise questions when we fall short. Most importantly, Open is for those that want to create change and have an impact. If that sounds like you, apply for this role and let's build the future of insurance together.
