Primary objective

As a member of the Anatomical Pathology work team, positively contribute to the provision of a timely, efficient, cost

effective and high-quality service to the Department of Health and public of the Northern Territory

Context statement

Operational needs require the recruitment of an individual with knowledge/skills in Anatomical Pathology to work in the

local Anatomical Pathology work team, and participate in a shift and on-call roster as required The position will involve

performing duties, including cut-up assist for grossing specimens, specimen tissue processing, embedding, microtomy on

routine samples, H&E staining, specialized staining and assist frozen section preparation. The position maps to CLF4 on the

Northern Territory Public Sector Capability Framework document.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Under minimal direct supervision, prioritise and analyse pathology specimens in the Anatomical Pathology area using a

range of developed technical skills and laboratory analysers. Supervise and train more junior staff.

2. Authorise results and provide appropriate clinical advice to junior staff and external clients.

3. Perform equipment preventative maintenance, and monitor availability of reagents and consumables in use, initiating

ordering as required.

4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Education and Qualifications: Possession of a degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent is mandatory.

2. Work History: Previous work experience in pathology or other laboratory with analytical procedures and protocols closely

aligned to those in use in an Anatomical Pathology laboratory is highly desirable.

3. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated ability to continue to develop the required skills and knowledge of the role and be

an active team member. Developing knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical factors impacting on the

provision of clinically useful results is also required. Developing awareness of monitoring stock levels in daily use to

initiate ordering in a timely manner.
