Yakanarra Community School – Teacher (Primary Generalist)

Remote East Kimberley |  Accommodation + Use of vehicle + Competitive remote salary package

A life-changing opportunity in one of the most unique places in Australia

Are you looking for something completely different? A change of pace, a challenge and a chance to make a meaningful contribution in a place few ever get to experience?

Yakanarra Community School is seeking a practical, down-to-earth, self-sufficient educator to join our small, dedicated team. This is not just a job — it's a lifestyle and a genuine opportunity to make a difference, where our students are the most beautiful, gentle people. Behaviour management is rarely required

About Yakanarra

Yakanarra is a very remote Walmajarri community, located 125 km south-west of Fitzroy Crossing, nestled beside the St George Ranges. Established in 1989 by Elder Hanson "Pampila" Boxer, the community is home to around 90 residents. It has a store, essential health service (RFDS), and a strong cultural foundation governed by the Yakanarra Aboriginal Corporation.

Life here is unlike anywhere else — beautiful, peaceful, and deeply connected to Country and culture. It also brings challenges: limited access to services, long distances from major centres and the need for resilience and independence. But for the right person, it's an unforgettable and life-affirming experience.

About the role

Let's be honest — the key responsibilities are below, but what you'll really be doing is contributing to something bigger than a role. You'll become part of a school that sits at the heart of the community, where the biggest achievements often come in small, powerful moments.

As a Primary Generalist Teacher, you will teach across a very small multi-age group of students from Years 3–9. While some students are high-school aged, the curriculum level aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum (Primary Band), and your focus will be on developing a strong local identity, culture and language, in addition to teaching and fulfilling the standards and requirements set out by SCSA through the guidance and mandated document, the WA Curriculum.

You'll need to be flexible — equally comfortable teaching from the classroom or taking learning outdoors, using the environment, culture and community as your classroom. The ideal teacher will embrace both structure and spontaneity: one day working through guided reading in small groups, the next exploring bush foods in the school's edible garden or mapping the riverbed with iPads.

You'll also be confident in using technology as a learning tool, integrating iPads and digital platforms to enrich engagement and capture progress. Working closely with the Principal and staff, you'll help deliver a culturally relevant, hands-on education that genuinely connects with students' lives and experiences.

Key responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

• Plan, deliver and assess engaging, differentiated programs aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum.

• Teach multi-age primary classes using flexible grouping and hands-on, practical learning experiences.

• Integrate language, culture, and on-Country learning in partnership with the school and community.

• Use formative and summative assessment to guide teaching and track student progress.

• Effectively integrate digital technology (including iPads) to support student learning.

• Contribute to the School's Operational Plan priorities.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement

• Create a safe, inclusive classroom where all students feel seen, supported, and respected.

• Implement the School's Code of Conduct, Behaviour Support, and Child Protection policies.

• Work collaboratively with the Principal, staff and visiting specialists (dietitians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and telehealth services) to meet individual student needs.

Community and Partnerships

• Build positive, trusting relationships with families and community members.

• Support school and community-based programs such as the Yakanarra Edible Garden, on-Country Fridays, and on-Country camps.

• Model respect, humility, and integrity in all interactions within the community.

Professional Practice

• Participate in professional learning and reflective practice.

• Engage with the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA) and other partner agencies for ongoing development.

• Contribute to compliance with registration, curriculum, and wellbeing standards.

About you

To thrive in Yakanarra, you'll need more than just the right skills — you'll need the right mindset.

We're looking for someone who is:

• Respectful of Aboriginal culture and open to learning.

• Kind, honest, and reliable — a team player who brings good humour and care.

• Flexible, practical, and unafraid of a bit of dust or adventure.

• Comfortable with remote living and limited services.

You will also need:

• Current WA Teacher Registration (TRBWA) or eligibility to obtain.

• Working With Children Check and National Police Clearance (or willingness to obtain).

• A current driver's licence.

• A sense of humour, non-judgemental and sees the best in humanity (essential).

Selection criteria

Essential

  1. Recognised teaching qualification and current (or eligible) TRBWA registration.
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach across multi-age classes using the Western Australian Curriculum (Primary).
  3. Understanding of EAL/D principles and strategies for learners acquiring Standard Australian English.
  4. Knowledge of and willingness to integrate IT across the curriculum, using iPads and other digital tools to enhance learning.
  5. Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practice.
  6. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with students, colleagues, families and community members.
  7. Willingness to live and work in a remote Aboriginal community and to participate fully in community life.

Desirable

  1. Experience teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  2. Knowledge of protective behaviours, wellbeing frameworks and child safety standards.
  3. Capacity to design and deliver engaging, flexible and differentiated programs — both inside the classroom and outdoors — drawing on the local environment and community.
  4. Interest or experience in areas such as art, language, outdoor education or community projects.

Why join Yakanarra Community School staff?

•  Work with a small, dedicated team and a Principal who will support your professional growth.

•  Competitive salary (CEWA) + salary packaging + relocation assistance.

•  Accommodation provided (at a nominal cost) + vehicle for (some) private use and community use.

•  Live among the stunning St George Ranges on Walmajarri Country.

•  Enjoy a quieter lifestyle with more freedom and purpose.

•  Make a genuine difference in a proud Aboriginal community.

Ideal for an adventurous individual (and a +1….?) seeking a meaningful, community-centred role in an extraordinary location.

How to Apply

Please send your application, including:

• A cover letter addressing the selection criteria (no greater than 3 pages)

• A current CV with two referees (no greater than 3 pages)

• TRBWA registration number (or proof of eligibility)

• Working With Children Card
