Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The role

Reporting to the shift supervisor, as a Jumbo Operator you are required to apply your technical expertise to carry out drilling operations for the purpose of underground mining development, blasting and ground support installation within the mine whilst working in a safe and efficient manner.

Key accountabilities

  • Participate in regular pre-start meetings, conduct and document daily pre-start checks on machinery and complete workplace inspections.
  • Operate and maintain equipment according to all Newmont procedures, Operation & Maintenance procedures and fault reporting systems.
  • Ensure correct signage is used at all times.
  • Accurate drilling of holes/face/stripping as per mine plan or verbal instructions using approved safe work procedures.
  • Correct and efficient installation of ground support as per mine plan or verbal instruction using approved safe work procedures.
  • Plans outlining the required ground support for the various headings are to be kept in the Jumbo Instruction Book for Ground Support and Profile Control. This is required to be kept up to date and with the operator when performing these operations.
  • Ensure accurate mark-up of face/stripping to facilitate excavation to within 100mm of design, including making the grade line on the left-hand wall of the drive.
  • Installation of hangers for mine services, cables and the like are to be bored every 3 meters.
  • Drilling must keep up with the mining cycle.
  • Complete Operators shift report accurately and submit to Supervisor.
  • Maintaining a duty of care to self and others and stop work if you think it is not safe while maintaining a high standard of housekeeping.

You, the person

  • Previous experience working as a Jumbo Operator.
  • Sound knowledge of varying ground support techniques and ground support theory.
  • Knowledge of drilling and charging for different ground conditions and heading profiles.
  • Must be competent with Charge-Up and Bogger duties.
  • Ability to achieve targets, mine to design, on grade and on time.
  • A strong focus on safety and the ability to work as part of a team.

Working conditions

The role is based in Tanami and offers a 14:14 FIFO roster from Perth, Brisbane, Darwin or Alice Springs.
