Barton, Australian Capital Territory, Australia Australian Strategic Policy Institute Full time $60,000 - $90,000 per year

Analyst – Defence Strategy

· We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven individual to join our Defence Strategy Program team.

· Be part of a dynamic and engaging organisational culture.

· Collaborate with a team committed to delivering exceptional outcomes in defence and security.

About ASPI

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for political, strategic and security leaders in Australia and the Indo-Pacific region.

ASPI was established by the Australian Government in 2001 to provide independent advice on Defence and strategic issues. ASPI's Charter, which guides all our work, explains the government's aims in establishing ASPI as:

· Improving the quality of policy advice received by government by providing contestability.

· Nourishing public debate and understanding of Defence and strategic affairs.

· Developing professional strategic policy expertise in Australia.

ASPI's Defence Strategy Program analyses how Australia defends its national interests in an era of intensifying strategic competition. Our research focuses on three areas: understanding Australia's security environment and regional partnerships; developing military strategy, deterrence concepts, and future force design; and strengthening the defence industrial base, supply chains, and economic resilience. Together, these efforts provide government, industry, and the public with evidence‑based insights to enhance Australia's defence.

About the Role

This role offers a unique opportunity for a motivated and research-driven individual to contribute to ASPI's work on defence matters. The Analyst will conduct rigorous research and policy analysis, support publications, and contribute to policy engagement efforts that enhance Australia's defence and strategic policy landscape. We are looking for an Analyst with a strong background focused on matters of defence and/or geostrategy, ideally, with a focus on one or more of the following areas: maritime security, Southeast Asia security dynamics, China and the PLA, defence industry policy and economics, defence capability and joint operations and planning.

· Collect, analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to support research outputs and policy recommendations.

· Co-author research reports, policy briefs, op-eds and other written outputs.

· Assist in preparing and delivering briefings and presentations for government, defence, and other stakeholders.

· Contribute to the planning and execution of events, workshops and roundtables.

· Maintain up-to-date awareness of national and international defence developments.

· Actively contribute to team collaboration, knowledge sharing and research planning.

· Engage with stakeholders, including government departments, defence industry and academia to inform and disseminate ASPI's work.

· Represent ASPI in meetings, briefings or conferences, as required.

· Support the team's business operations, including administrative and project coordination tasks where necessary.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

· Demonstrated research and analytical skills, preferably in defence, security, foreign policy, or related fields.

· Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, structured, and impactful research outputs.

· Strong oral communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas to varied audiences.

· Solid understanding of Australia's strategic environment and defence policy landscape.

· Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently and proactively.

· Strong collaboration skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team.

· Familiarity with data analysis, literature reviews, or policy monitoring tools.

Desirable:

· Experience working in or alongside government, think tanks, defence, or academic institutions.

· Evidence of published analysis or research in reputable outlets on relevant topics of national security or defence.

· Experience supporting policy engagement activities, events, or funding/grant proposals.

· Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field (e.g., International Relations, Strategic Studies, Political Science, Defence Studies, Economics, or similar).
