Our client is a privately owned gold miner with an active open pit gold operation in Laos. With a new underground development planned for Q1 of 2026 our client seeks to build the owners team to manage the national team and appointed contractor.

On behalf of our client MPI are seeking an experienced Underground Manager to lead the development and operation of underground mining activities. Reporting to the Underground Mining Director, this leadership role is critical during the transition from project development to full operational status.

You will be responsible for building and implementing systems to support underground operations, whilst managing the performance of both the Technical Services Team and Underground Mining Contractor.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as delegate for the Underground Mining Director when required
  • Lead the underground Technical Services Team (Mining Engineers, Geologists, Geotechnical Engineers, Surveyors)
  • Oversee mine planning, scheduling, budgeting, and cost control
  • Ensure daily operations meet mine plans, safety standards, and production targets
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with design, safety, and contractual obligations
  • Drive a culture of safety, performance, and continuous improvement
  • Coordinate closely with Exploration, Geology, and Processing teams to ensure long-term ore supply
  • Work with contractors to ensure equipment maintenance and availability align with production needs
  • Provide operational reports and assist in budget and forecast development.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven leadership experience in underground mining operations
  • Strong background in mine planning and contractor management
  • Committed to safety, continuous improvement, and operational excellence
  • Excellent communication and team coordination skills.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or related field highly desirable. In the absence of a degree qualification, Significant experience in underground management, spanning 5+ years
  • Preferred candidates from Australia or New Zealand
  • Bilingual capabilities would be highly regarded.
