Family Counsellor / Case Manager
- Specialist counselling role supporting women, children and young people impacted by family and sexual violence
- Deliver case management, risk assessments, counselling and outreach support in a values-led organisation
- Full-time role, based in Summer Hill with outreach across the Sydney LGA
The Impact of the Organisation
For almost 50 years, Jannawi Family Centre has been working with families experiencing family and sexual violence – providing specialist interventions to children aged 0–12 years and to vulnerable families. The service was established because people in the community recognised the urgent need to support children experiencing neglect and abuse and were compelled to act.
Jannawi exists because people were motivated to create meaningful change for children and families. Today, they continue this legacy through specialist, trauma-informed interventions that build safety, strengthen relationships and foster recovery. Guided by values of caring, respect, hope, integrity, community, compassion and growth, they remain deeply committed to ensuring children and families can heal and thrive.
The Impact of the Role
As a Family Counsellor, you will provide specialist support to women, children and young people living in the Sydney LGA who have experienced domestic, family and sexual violence. While the service is based at Summer Hill, much of the work will involve outreach, offering counselling, risk assessments, case management, practical support and, where appropriate, home visits and transport assistance.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Social Workers and Early Childhood Teachers, you will contribute to a holistic service that delivers high-quality outcomes for families. Your role will be central in ensuring that clients are supported on their journey toward safety, recovery and healing from trauma, always in alignment with Jannawi's vision, purpose and values.
This position offers the opportunity to be part of a values-driven organisation where social justice and community impact are at the heart of the work.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assessing the needs of referred families and developing tailored case plans
- Providing individual, sibling and family counselling, as well as group-based programs
- Supporting parents to strengthen their parenting capacity, safety and communication
- Advocating for families and ensuring access to health, housing, legal and welfare supports
- Maintaining accurate records, progress reviews and therapeutic documentation
- Contributing to interagency meetings and coordinated care responses
- Participating in supervision, reflective practice and continuous professional development
About You
You are a skilled counsellor who brings empathy, cultural awareness and a strong commitment to supporting families impacted by trauma and violence. You're motivated by social justice and thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Counselling or Social Sciences (or equivalent experience)
- Experience working with families affected by interpersonal violence, abuse or neglect
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, child protection legislation and interagency guidelines
- Experience delivering both individual counselling and group-based interventions
- Knowledge of local health, housing, welfare and legal service systems
- Cultural competence in working with CALD, CARM and Indigenous families
- Highly developed communication and relationship-building skills
You will also hold:
- Current Working with Children Check
- National Police Check (or willingness to obtain)
- A valid NSW Driver's Licence
Please note: Culturally and Linguistically Diverse candidates are an essential criterion as this is a CALD-identified position as per the funding agreement. Please indicate this in your application.
Benefits of Working with Jannawi Family Centre
- Purpose-driven role in a long-established, values-led organisation
- SCHADS Award Level 5.1 + NFP salary packaging benefits
