St John of God Midland Hospital is seeking a passionate and proactive OHS Advisor & Injury Management Specialist to join our team on a permanent part-time basis. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the case management of injured or unwell caregivers, supporting their ability to remain at work or return safely and sustainably.

You will coordinate and deliver early intervention and rehabilitation programs, offering expert guidance on both work-related and non-work-related injuries or illnesses to divisional line leaders. Ideally you will have extensive experience with hazardous manual task/ergonomics control improvements and demonstrate the ability in managing risks associated with hazardous manual tasks in a workplace

A key focus of this role is the management of risks associated with hazardous manual tasks. Ideally you will have extensive experience in ergonomics and manual task risk control, with a proven ability to identify, assess, and implement effective strategies to reduce injury risks. Your expertise will be instrumental in driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance workplace safety and reduce manual handling injuries.

You will also lead initiatives that promote a positive safety culture managing OHS processes, influencing leaders and caregivers, and using a variety of tools to monitor and manage risk. Your work will be instrumental in ensuring health, safety, and wellbeing programs are implemented effectively across the organisation.

The Position

  • Assist in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Manual Task initiatives in strategic alignment with the SJGHC Occupational Health and Safety Management System and the Group OHS and Injury Management team, to prevent manual task related injuries.
  • Ensure early intervention and rehabilitation following injury or illness is promptly and effectively identified, with active involvement from the caregiver's line leader.
  • Facilitate return to work programs by identifying and negotiating suitable duties, liaising with treating practitioners and leaders to support safe reintegration.
  • Provide expert advice and ensure compliance with relevant workers' compensation legislation and best practice injury management standards in line with Group policies.
  • Work closely with the workers' compensation claims team to support safe and timely return to work outcomes.
  • Initiate early intervention referrals to preferred providers, where needed, in consultation with the line leader.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records in the injury management database in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Promote and deliver education to leaders and caregivers on early intervention and injury management responsibilities.
  • Support non-work-related return to work cases, including arranging fitness for duty assessments, drug and alcohol screening, and managing RTW plans.
  • Develop injury prevention strategies in collaboration with the OHS team to reduce future risks.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, including injured caregivers, line leaders, payroll, health professionals, and insurers to ensure coordinated care and support.
  • Support the OHS Manager in the implementation and monitoring of a systems approach to OHS as defined in the SJGHC OHS management system, policies and procedures.

Position Requirements

The successful applicant will have substantial industry experience in workplace-based early intervention programs, rehabilitation, and claims management. A sound understanding of Workers' Compensation legislation is essential, along with the ability to hold or obtain a Return-to-Work Coordinator Certificate. The role also requires a strong knowledge of contemporary OHS legislation and practices, including risk assessment, hazard identification, control measures, and the ability to conduct workplace inspections, audits, and incident investigations.

Excellent prioritisation and organisational skills are essential, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. The ideal candidate will possess well-developed written and verbal communication skills and be confident in building rapport with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrate knowledge and experience with hazardous manual task will be essential for this role.

  • Salary: $103,303 to $114,732 pro rata, plus 12% superannuation
  • Permanent part time position working 60.8 hours per fortnight
