About the Role

This position is based at Forensicare's Fairfield administration site, at the Thomas Embling Hospital.

The Thomas Embling Hospital (T.E.H) comprises various units that accommodate patients requiring acute and sub-acute levels of care; and providing similar services for rehabilitation & independent living.

The Senior Dietitian will utilise their knowledge, skills and capacity to provide and promote optimal nutritional health support to both the consumers and service in line with a holistic view of health and recognition of the importance of the intersection between physical and mental health.

This role is also supported to work at a population level with the service to improve nutritional and physical health by promoting lifestyle change, food access and security, education, training and health promotion and prevention models.

As the Senior Dietitian, you will:

  • Support consumers and the clinical teams to work towards improving concurrent and comorbid conditions (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome) and reducing harm/deterioration from chronic physical health conditions.
  • Promote the importance of food security (i.e., food access, awareness, supply and utilisation) through improved meal planning, budgeting, shopping, food preparation knowledge and skills.
  • Makes appropriate nutrition diagnoses and identifies priority nutrition issues based on all available information (e.g. relevant health, medical, cultural, social, psychological, economic, personal, environmental, dietary intake, and food supply data)
  • Utilise health promotion models, provision of education and coaching skills to enhance lifestyle change and consumer outcomes, in either individual or group-based sessions.
  • Empowers individuals, groups and/or the broader community to improve their own health through engagement, facilitation, education and collaboration.

About You:

  • Meets the National Competency Standards for Dietitians in Australia (Dietitians Australia, 2015).
  • Demonstrates understaning of mental health diagnosis, treatment and associated risks of physical health conditions.
  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of the physical health and mental health needs relevant to the forensic mental health population and institutional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective communication with individuals, groups, organisations and communities from various cultural, socioeconomic, organisational and professional backgrounds.
  • Experience with working with people with mental ill health to negotiate and facilitate nutrition, behaviour and lifestyle change and empower clients with self-management skills
