The Opportunity

The Research Services Officer – Oceanography Field Technician provides essential technical support for oceanographic field operations conducted by the Office for Algal Bloom Research. The role involves deploying, operating, and maintaining oceanographic sensors, moorings, and autonomous monitoring platforms, ensuring the collection of high-quality physical and biogeochemical data to support harmful algal bloom monitoring and related research.

The Office of Algal Bloom Research

The Office for Algal Bloom Research has recently been established within the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), as South Australia's central hub dedicated to the national integration of algal bloom science.

This pioneering initiative strengthens South Australia's capability to monitor, predict, and respond to harmful algal bloom (HAB) events. It builds on SARDI's scientific expertise and positions the state as a leader in algal bloom research and management.

We are seeking motivated, skilled, and suitably qualified professionals who are inspired to contribute to pioneering research and operational programs that protect marine ecosystems, aquaculture, and coastal communities.

Special Conditions

• Successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check (NPC) prior to being made an offer of employment.
• Opportunity for up to two years.
• Full time, 37.5 hours per week.

Requirements

• Current driver's license and demonstrated capability to tow trailers.
• Out of hours work and inter/intrastate travel will be required.
• Field trips on research and commercial vessels will be required.
• Willingness to undertake further training as required (e.g., dogging, forklift licence).
• Australian residency or valid work permit (responsibility of applicant).
• You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations when applying for a role.
• Must undertake emergency management training and participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery as required.

Qualifications

Essential:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience in Marine Science, Fisheries Science or Ecology.

Desirable:

• Current Coxswain certification and capability to command vessels undertaking coastal oceanographic operations.
• Elements of Shipboard Safety certification.

Remuneration

OPS3 - $67,589 min - $72,033 max per annum, plus superannuation
