Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and state-wide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.
About the Emergency Department
The Austin Health Emergency Department is one of Victoria's busiest, treating nearly 90,000 patients annually, with 20% being paediatric cases. Our department offers comprehensive care for both adults and children, supported by a state-of-the-art 24-bed Short Stay Unit and the Victorian Poisons Information Centre.
We are committed to delivering timely, compassionate care while leading in emergency medicine education and research. Our robust training programs attract top healthcare professionals, and we provide specialised rotations and postgraduate opportunities.
Despite the high demands, our dedicated team ensures excellent, timely care for a diverse patient mix, including complex medical, surgical, and trauma cases. Guided by our values of compassion, respect, quality, and learning, we continuously innovate to improve patient outcomes.
About the program/role
We invite passionate Grade 2 Registered Nurses to join our dynamic Emergency Department team through a 12-month Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP) program. This program is thoughtfully designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
As a participant in the Emergency Department TSP program, you'll sharpen your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while advancing your clinical practice under expert guidance. This unique opportunity allows you to work with increasingly complex patients, fostering significant professional growth.
By the program's end, you'll have enhanced your ability to provide evidence-based care to both adult and paediatric patients requiring complex care. Our blended learning approach ensures a comprehensive educational experience with tailored learning activities and dedicated study days.
The program is built on a well-established professional development framework, offering a supported pathway into Emergency Nursing that includes:
- A structured education program grounded in the latest evidence-based practices.
- Opportunities to develop and refine skills in managing acutely unwell emergency patients.
- A clear progression pathway for those interested in pursuing postgraduate studies in Emergency Nursing.
Our dedicated nursing education team is committed to supporting your journey. With access to study days and clinical skill enhancement opportunities, you'll thrive in a nurturing environment that encourages growth and learning.
Throughout the 12-month Transition to Specialty Practice: Emergency Department program, you'll immerse yourself in the dynamic world of emergency care. You'll acquire essential knowledge and competencies through a blend of study days and hands-on clinical practice. Key areas of focus include comprehensive patient assessments for both adults and paediatrics, ECG interpretation, and advanced high-dependency care skills such as non-invasive ventilation and haemodynamic monitoring.
As a TSP Nurse in the Emergency Department, your daily responsibilities will include prioritising and delivering care within your scope of practice, adjusting care plans based on patient assessments, and actively expanding your expertise through core competencies relevant to emergency nursing. You'll continuously identify learning opportunities through self-reflection and feedback, while striving to achieve and maintain the clinical standards required under the guidance of our management and education teams.
About you
You will be someone with excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to self-development and education. You'll enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and have a commitment to quality, best practice, and environmental safety.
You'll further have:

- At least one year's acute nursing experience
- Successfully completed a graduate program
- A patient focused approach to care
- A positive approach to ongoing self-education and skill development
