About The Opportunity
As the Grounds and Facilities School Officer, you will contribute to the efficient and effective operation of Brisbane Montessori School by ensuring that our grounds and facilities are maintained to a high standard, creating a safe and supportive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
You will provide operational support to the Principal, Business Manager, or their nominated delegate, undertaking a range of day-to-day activities that are routine in nature, following established processes and instructions. You will also be expected to demonstrate initiative and independence in managing regular duties while seeking guidance for non-routine matters.
This role is an important part of maintaining the presentation, safety, and functionality of the school environment in alignment with BMS's values and Montessori philosophy.
Conditions:
Hours of work
Typically, Monday to Friday, 6:30 am – 2:30 pm. Some flexibility required for early/late contractor arrivals or emergency responses.
Overtime expectations
Occasional overtime may be required for urgent repairs, project works or emergency events. Time in lieu (TIL) may be offered in accordance with school policy.
On-call responsibilities
Availability for after-hours call-outs (e.g. alarms, security breaches, urgent repairs) may be required.
Special conditions or requirements
Must hold and maintain a current Blue Card. May be required to undertake Fire Safety Advisor training and hold or be willing to obtain a Certificate IV in WHS. Must comply with all WHS, security, and child safety requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Relevant trade qualification, Certificate IV in WHS, or equivalent experience in facilities coordination, site safety or maintenance services.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in an educational, community, or child- focused environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of WHS legislation, regulations and practical implementation in a workplace setting.
- Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) for paid employment (or willingness to obtain). Current First Aid and CPR Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Manual Driver's Licence (Class C).
Desirable:
- Trade skills, horticulture certificate, or equivalent experience.
- Experience working in an educational or child-focused environment.
- Basic knowledge of compliance and reporting procedures (e.g. hazard reporting, contractor sign-in).
- Understanding of Montessori philosophy and the importance of the prepared environment (training will be provided).

Grounds and Facilities Skills
Demonstrated ability to maintain large grounds and facilities, including lawn care, gardens, outdoor play equipment, furniture moves, and general upkeep.
Maintenance and Safety Awareness
Proven ability to carry out routine repairs and maintenance safely, with an understanding of when to escalate tasks to qualified trades or contractors.
Organisation and Initiative
Ability to follow daily schedules, prioritise competing tasks, and use initiative in responding to grounds or facilities issues.
Communication and Teamwork
Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to work collaboratively with staff, contractors, and the wider school community.
Reliability and Work Ethic
Proven track record of reliability, self-motivation, and pride in maintaining a professional and safe school environment.
