Expression of Interest for Volunteer Board Members – Community Legal Centre

The Illawarra Legal Centre (ILC), established in 1985, is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting social justice and providing free legal support to individuals experiencing social and economic disadvantage in the Illawarra region.

ILC provides a broad range of community legal and support services, including generalist law, welfare rights, financial counselling, and tenancy services. We are also the service provider for the University of Wollongong's Student Legal and Financial Counselling Services. Our services cover the Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Kiama LGAs, with Tenancy and Welfare Rights assistance extending from Helensburgh to the NSW border.

ILC receives both state and federal funding to deliver its services and is governed by a volunteer board. The board is responsible for the
governance, strategic direction, and financial health
of the Centre, ensuring accountability and sustainability while advancing our mission.

Due to term limits of several long-term members being reached, we are seeking expressions of interest from individuals who are passionate about our mission and eager to contribute to the future of the Centre.

We are looking for individuals with expertise in the following areas:

  • Solicitors
    : We invite solicitors who are interested in serving on our board to contribute their professional insights and ensure the Centre's work aligns with current legal standards and best practices.
  • Treasurers
    : Individuals with experience in financial management and accounting are encouraged to apply. As a board member with treasurer responsibilities, you will oversee our financial practices, ensuring transparency and sustainability in line with our mission.
  • Illawarra Locals
    : We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who live in or have strong ties to the Illawarra region. Your local knowledge will be invaluable in helping the Centre better serve the needs of the community.

Board membership details:

  • The board meets every six weeks on a Wednesday for approximately two hours from 5pm. We meet in person and can support virtual attendance.
  • Terms are for
    one year
    , with eligibility for reappointment.
  • Board membership requires joining ILC as a member, with an annual fee of
    $5
    .
  • The board is comprised of eight non-staff members and up to eight staff board members, providing a collaborative environment to guide the Centre's work.

By joining our volunteer board, you'll play an essential role in shaping the future of a vital community resource that has been advocating for access to justice for nearly 40 years. Your involvement will directly contribute to our work in supporting people who are facing systemic barriers to justice.
