Job Summary
The Data Scientist role analyses and interprets complex datasets to extract meaningful insights, builds and\or maintains predictive models and prepares management reporting information to enable data-driven decisions. The role is expected to utilise various techniques like statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation techniques to uncover patterns, make predictions to support the creation of actionable plans to improve business outcomes and manage risks.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Analyses complex datasets using statistical techniques to provide actionable insights to business managers.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with data engineers to ensure datasets are maintained and developed to support ongoing analysis and reporting. Identifies new datasets that can be leveraged and incorporated into productionised environments to improve reporting and analytics outcomes.
  • Supports ongoing improvements to data governance practices and the data management framework.
  • Devises and utilises algorithms and models to mine big-data stores; perform data and error analysis to improve models; clean and validate data for uniformity and accuracy.
  • Analyses data for trends and patterns and interpret data with clear objectives in mind.
  • Implements analytical models in production by collaborating with software developers and machine-learning engineers.

Problem Solving:

  • Identify business problems that can be addressed with data analysis.
  • Solve problems and answer questions identified by the business.
  • Develop and implement data-driven solutions.
  • Stay up to date on the latest advancements in data science.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency with relevant programming languages and tools such as Python and R, SQL – for data manipulation, and Tableau or Power BI for data visualisation.
  • Exceptional skills in Microsoft excel.
  • Proficiency in data security, privacy, compliance regulations, obligations from regulators, and law.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to convert insights and recommendations with impact.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education & Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field like computer science, mathematics, or statistics.
  • Postgraduate degree, such as a master's in data science would be highly regarded.
  • Two or more years work experience in a relevant role. Insurance or Banking Industry experience is not required but would be highly regarded.
  • Mathematics and Statistics: Solid understanding of mathematical concepts and statistical principles for analysing data and drawing meaningful insights.
  • Data Analysis and Visualisation: Ability to explore, clean, and transform data, as well as present findings effectively through visualisations.
  • Machine Learning: Knowledge of machine learning algorithms and techniques for building predictive models and extracting patterns from data.
  • Business Acumen: Understanding business contexts and how data insights can be applied to solve real-world problems is important for translating data into actionable strategies.

  • Sydney based.
