About us
Founded in 2017, Q-CTRL has grown to become the global leader in quantum. We're using control to solve the hardest problems facing quantum technology, improving hardware performance and accelerating pathways to useful quantum computers and other technologies. As a product-led company, we bring together diverse teams such as product, design, engineering and research to help achieve our mission of making quantum technology useful. Join us to help shape the quantum future.
As one of the fastest growing companies in the quantum sector, we've had a number of key milestones:
- In November 2023, we announced an industry-first partnership with IBM Quantum Services, natively integrating our performance management software with all IBM quantum computers. Building off of this relationship, in September 2024 we started offering two services via IBM's new Qiskit Functions Catalog as an inaugural partner.
- Designed and moved our Global HQ offices and lab space into the first purpose-built (and award winning) commercial and research facility for a quantum technology company in Australia.
- Continued to deliver real world outcomes across the quantum sectors, with our work with Australian Defence on software-ruggedized quantum sensing for navigation without GPS, as featured in the New York Times.
- In October 2024, we announced our record breaking expansion of our Series B funding round to USD $113M, with $59M USD of new capital.
- Grew our global presence to include Los Angeles, Berlin, and Oxford - as well as the recently announced office in San Francisco.
From educating the workforce on how quantum computing works, to building the next generation of quantum sensors, to delivering massive performance gains for end-users, it all starts with hiring the right talent. If you want to help us build the Quantum future, read on.
About the role
Reporting to the Head of Design, as a Senior Product Designer you'll work to redefine how we represent and interact with complex concepts in one of the most impactful technologies of our time. You'll be part of a pioneering design team, working closely with stakeholders across product, engineering, research, and marketing to deliver world-class products. You'll use your experience to foster a culture of design excellence, actively contribute to the design process, and support the growth of your teammates.
This role is focused on Boulder Opal, our AI-powered quantum control software helping quantum researchers, hardware vendors, and quantum computing owners alike to build and access superior quantum computers. By combining advanced quantum physics with new forms of AI, Boulder Opal enables teams to design, automate, and deploy control solutions that improve performance and accelerate development. You'll work across user interfaces, APIs, CLIs, and technical documentation to shape the full product experience, bringing clarity and usability to a highly technical domain.
What you'll do:- Navigate uncertainty: Drive discovery at the early stages of product definition, using your UX expertise to bring clarity to complex user needs.
- Prioritize the user: Engage in the design process end to end, from research and wireframing to prototyping and testing, with a consistent focus on usability and trust.
- Collaborate at all levels: Work closely with cross-functional teams to shape product direction and ensure design is tightly integrated from definition to delivery.
- Build systems: Contribute to the evolution of our design system and apply systems thinking to create scalable, consistent design solutions.
- Set the standard: Lead the conceptualization and execution of design solutions for technically complex products, helping define best-in-class experiences in a new category.
- Shape the experience: Design experiences and interactions that span user interfaces, APIs, CLIs, and documentation, ensuring usability and coherence throughout.
- Advocate for quality: Champion a culture of design excellence through thoughtful execution, peer mentorship, and a shared commitment to high standards.
- Other duties within the Employee's skills and experience, or with reasonable training.
- 5+ years of product design or related industry experience
- A strong portfolio showcasing your ability to tackle complex design challenges across systems, workflows, and technical products
- Experience designing for developer-facing tools, infrastructure software, or data platforms, especially in domains like ML/AI, or dev tooling
- Familiarity designing for developers across a range of surfaces, from user interfaces to APIs, CLIs, and documentation
- Strong discovery and facilitation skills, you know how to engage stakeholders and structure collaboration to create aligned outcomes
- Experience working with and contributing to scalable design systems
- Clear, confident communication, able to explain decisions, structure ideas, and work across disciplines with ease
- A focus on quality and a desire to help shape a high-performing, thoughtful design team
