Position overview
We are seeking a strategic and collaborative professional to join the Bureau's Water Section to help shape the next chapter of the National Water Account (NWA), building on its strong foundations to enhance its relevance, accessibility, and impact. The Water Section is dedicated to increasing the value and impact the Bureau delivers to its customers, with particular focus on supporting the Commonwealth Government, and State and Territory lead water policy agencies and large water utilities.
We are looking for someone who understands the power of water data in informing national priorities, you thrive in partnership environments, working closely with partners and stakeholders to co-design solutions that respond to evolving government and community needs. As the Water Accounts Lead you will:
- Contribute to national water data priorities that improve information availability.
- Work closely with other Commonwealth Government agencies, such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to support meaningful water information sharing across domains.
- Co-ordinate activities across the Bureau to support enhancements to water reporting.
- Work closely within the Bureau to ensure the best water information outcomes, with a focus on water information reporting.
- Lead the uplift of water information products and services, such as the National Water Account.
- Work closely with customers and partners to support products and services that enable impactful decisions.
- The Water Accounts Lead will be comfortable leading engagement activities and discussing data concepts with a range of experts and non-experts, identifying opportunities for improvement and delivering projects.

Role responsibilities
The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
- Lead initiatives that enhance the Bureau's products and services, particularly those related to national water information reporting. For example, co-ordinating opportunities to enhance currently reporting requirements, such as the National Water Account refresh.
- Work with agencies and customers to support water information data sharing, alignment of definitions, and interoperability of water information.
- Represent the Bureau in interagency working groups and national forums related to water information.
- Gather, analyse and share customer requirements and develop opportunities that support continuous improvement and innovation in water information practices.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with key partners, and internal stakeholders to understand customer needs, realising customer benefits.
- Support the delivery of key program initiatives and priorities for the Bureau's Water Section. Undertake other tasks related to team and Bureau priorities as required.
- Supporting broader Agriculture and Water Program or Bureau activities as required.
- A commitment to the APS Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct and understanding of the Bureau's diversity and inclusion statement of commitment and the Bureau Way.
- Comply with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
Mandatory qualifications:
- A degree or diploma of an Australian educational institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties.
Merit pool
The selection process will establish a merit pool that may be used to fill similar positions within 18 months.
