EL1 Data Scientist (Professional Stream) – 12 Month Contract
Location: Surry Hills (Hybrid – min. 3 days in office)
Estimated Start Date: Monday, 13 October 2025
Contract Duration: 12 months, with a 12-month extension option
Hours: 37.5 hours per week

About the Role:
The EL1 Data Scientist (Professional Stream) is a critical leadership role, providing oversight of complex data science projects that directly support the strategic objectives of the Agency. You will lead a high-performing team, manage key deliverables, and provide expert analysis, modelling, and policy advice to influence decision-making at the highest levels.
The role requires advanced technical expertise, strong leadership, and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders across government and policy areas. You will operate with a high degree of independence, tackling complex problems and delivering innovative data-driven solutions to shape the future of the Agency.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and deliver high-quality data analysis, policy proposal briefs, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Produce and present complex technical, professional, and policy advice to internal and external stakeholders.
- Research and implement innovative data science and interdisciplinary methods to address business challenges.
- Design and deploy advanced statistical, mathematical, and data science models to support Agency priorities.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners across policy, legal, service design, technology, and actuarial areas.
- Communicate effectively, tailoring technical outcomes to diverse audiences.
Technical Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience in data science/analytics supporting government policy development and processes (budget, legislation, briefs).
- Strong leadership and stakeholder management experience.
- Advanced skills in R & Python for data manipulation, analysis, and model deployment.
- Proficiency in SQL and working with databases and data storage systems (e.g., AWS S3).
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Strong understanding of advanced modelling techniques and their application in policy contexts.
Desirable
- Expertise in statistical modelling (e.g., Generalised Linear Modelling) or machine learning techniques such as gradient boosting.
- Experience applying technical skills to solve open-ended and evolving business problems.
About the Team You'll join the Analytics, Data & Actuarial Division (ADA), led by the Scheme Actuary. The Division supports scheme monitoring, financial sustainability, and risk management. The Data Science Hub within ADA focuses on applying advanced data science and AI/ML techniques to solve complex agency challenges.
Your work will directly contribute to the Annual Financial Sustainability Report (AFSR) and provide critical analysis and modelling to inform policy development, operational improvements, and long-term scheme sustainability.
