The Rockhampton Grammar School is seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Head of Rugby to join our team in 2026.

Teachers and Non/Teacher applications with Rugby League and/or Union experience are welcome.

The Rockhampton Grammar School was founded in 1881 and is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, educating and caring for students from Prep to Year 12, as well as the Early Learning Years. The School is the largest independent boarding school in Queensland and the second largest co-educational boarding school in Australia. It is a leading school in regional Queensland and one of the foremost schools in regional Australia. The Rockhampton Grammar School has achieved great success in the academic, cultural, sporting and vocational fields over the past 144 years. POSITION TITLE:  Head of Rugby

DEPARTMENT:  Co-Curricular

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time | 5 Year Tenure

REPORTS TO:  Director of Co-Curriculum

ABOUT THE ROLE: Development and implementation of the Rugby Programme of the School

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties of the Head of Rugby Union and League are:

Representing the School

  • Communicating the vision and purpose of RGS Rugby Union & Rugby League effectively;
  • Developing and maintaining close and positive relationships with local Rugby Union & Rugby League Associations;
  • Attending Parent Support Group monthly meetings and leading conversations about RGS Rugby Union & Rugby League.

Ensure RGS Rugby Union/Rugby League is managed productively

  • Leading the coaches, referees, players and volunteers in working to meet the goals, future direction and priorities of RGS Rugby Union/Rugby League programs;
  • Organisation and delegation of tasks to administrators, coaches, parents or players;
  • Creating and actively maintaining a positive rugby union & rugby league culture.

Management

  • Sourcing, allocating and supporting coaches to appropriate teams;
  • Organising / facilitating competitions whether they be weekly, stand-alone carnivals, or tours;
  • Assisting with behaviour management of players, parents, and other team's in support of members.

Communication

  • Working with the marketing department to publish communications on a range of media including Facebook, emails, notices and assemblies to enhance knowledge of rugby union & rugby league happenings;
  • Working closely with Director of Co-curricular, Sports Registrar, Sports Administrator and other Teachers in Charge (TIC's) and staff.

Development

  • Designing, developing and reflecting on programs using research and up-to-date information that is in-line with relevant peak sporting bodies at local, State and national levels;
  • Coordinating programs designed to improve skills of members in every area (coaching, refereeing, volunteering, playing);
  • Collecting, formulating and providing feedback to members, to assist in the effectiveness of programs;
  • Managing talent identification programs that encourage the development and selection of holistic athletes;
  • Liaising with auxiliary staff to support the development of athletes in a range of areas (nutrition, mental health and fitness);
  • Working with coaches in rugby union & rugby league across all grades.

Teaching

In addition to the above, if a member of the teaching staff, a Teacher is expected to:

  • Teach up to a maximum of 20 periods per week;
  • Design and implement curriculum programmes that embrace School's Learning Framework;
  • Create a positive classroom environment that enhances student learning;
  • Establish and review students' learning goals/outcomes and modify curriculum programmes accordingly;
  • Continuously reflect on teaching practices and full participate in the School's Personal Learning Programme;
  • Build relationships and share teaching insights with colleagues in order to coordinate activities for students;
  • Communicate with parents about student learning;
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to professional development;
  • Contribute to the School and wider community through involvement in co-curricular activities;
  • Maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.

Other duties as the Director of Co-Curriculum may reasonably require from time to time.

REQUIRED LICENCES/CERTIFICATES

  • If a member of the teaching staff, Registered with Queensland College of Teachers (QCT)
  • If not a member of the teaching staff a current Working with Children Screening and Blue Card
  • Expertise in the sport of rugby union and/or rugby league
  • Coaching Qualifications in rugby union and/or rugby league
  • Skills and expertise in Athletic Development will be highly regarded
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, coaches, sports associations, contractors, teachers and service providers
  • Excellent time management skills and an ability to prioritise
  • Ability to work as a member of a team as well as autonomously
  • Current Full Driver's License
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check
  • Willingness to complete the Safeguarding Children Online Training Certificate
  • Commitment to a Child Safe environment and the school's Practice and Behaviour Guidelines
  • Willingness to support the ethos and values of the School
  • Experience in an educational setting would be highly regarded

  • Maintain valid "working with children" documentation;
  • Undergo periodic "national criminal history record" checks;
  • Report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment that may indicate a possible rick to children and young people;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The successful applicant will be subject to a "Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check" where applicable. The School undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children and young people in its care. This includes reference checks, identity checks qualification check and professional registration checks.
