Our team
This role sits within the Technical and Engineering Team and is responsible for contributing high level machining, light fabrication and technical support services and advice to the organisation and its stakeholders.
The Field Operations and Engineering Section (FOES), delivers innovative technical, engineering and field support services and advice across Geoscience Australia land and marine field projects, including priority programs and mission critical activities.
The Role
You will work with a team of two other machinists to supply your expert technical skills and advice within your area of expertise to other projects being undertaken across Geoscience Australia including assistance to international partners.
This role works closely with key internal and external stakeholders and requires a high level of communication skills to be able to report and manage technical issues to stakeholders and clients and deliver mission critical activities within Geoscience Australia.
In this role you will:
- Provide manual and CNC machining services to support section and client needs
- Provide fitting and welding support as required
- Perform simple sheet metal work as required
- Utilise subject matter expertise to provide technical guidance advice and requirements on concept designs
- Work with engineering team, clients and external stakeholders to develop prototype designs
- Manufacture scientific and technical equipment, systems and components, complete testing, installation, operation and maintenance
- Adhere to and promote the Work Place Health and Safety requirements specific to a mechanical engineering work area and the broader public service work environment
- Undertake procurement of goods and services to meet section needs in accordance with Australian Government procurement framework
- Contribute to building a positive team environment
- Ability to carry out physically demanding work including in what can be extreme weather environments

Skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
- Trade qualifications in fitting and machining is essential
- Advanced diploma in mechanical engineering is desirable
- Forklift license is desirable
