What You'll Be Doing

• The Genetic Pathologist will provide high quality diagnostic and consultative, specialty services in Genetic Pathology, and will participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
• The Genetic Pathologist will work in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) Department of Medical Genomics Laboratory and as required, the Concord Repatriation General Hospital (CRGH) Molecular Medicine Laboratory. The Genetic Pathologist will report to the Clinical Director for the Department of Medical Genomics at RPAH.
• The Genetic Pathologist will take primary responsibility (supervision, implementation, and reporting) for at least one major program in genetic testing. Current programs include pharmacogenomics, genomic bioinformatics, neurogenetics, familial hypercholesterolaemia, and providing back-up for the Somatic Cell DNA Testing Service following negotiation with the Clinical Director. Responsibility for single-gene-based tests will be shared among the Genetic Pathologists at RPAH and CRGH. The Genetic Pathologist will join and contribute to the work of SLHD's Institute of Precision Medicine & Bioinformatics and the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator (SBA) Precision Medicine Research Facility.
• The Genetic Pathologist will ensure a high standard of professional performance and encourage an academic environment which supports research and development.

Selection Criteria

• Current medical practitioner registered or eligible for specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in Genetic Pathology, or an equivalent specialist qualification recognised under the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Applicants expected to receive Fellowship within six months of the closing date are eligible to apply.
• Demonstrated commitment to basic, applied or clinical research and/or medical education and staff training.
• Proven ability to work as a team member with effective communication, interpersonal skills and adaptability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Demonstrated personal qualities including effective communication skills, motivation, initiative, time management and commitment to professional development.
• Demonstrated commitment to the principles of clinical quality management, continuous improvement and a contemporary knowledge of National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) Standards and NATA accreditation processes.
• Demonstrated contemporary clinical knowledge and technical expertise in the specialty of Genetic Pathology, with ability to apply principles of evidence-based medicine to clinical and laboratory practice, and to contribute to the advance of biomedical science.
• In depth understanding of genomic bioinformatics principles as they apply to genomic DNA testing, with demonstrated experience in molecular genetics DNA research.
• Demonstrated track record and/or qualifications suitable for an academic title with an affiliated university or research institute, enabling teaching and research collaboration beyond traditional hospital settings.
