Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Strategic Projects Advisor

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Save the Children Australia Full time $150,000 - $200,000 per year

This is an identified position open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only.

Are you passionate about the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families? Experienced translating big ideas into reality, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders? This is no ordinary role. This is your chance to make a real difference by guiding the way Save the Children Australia (SCA) undertakes Truth Telling across our organisation and builds cultural safety and culturally informed practices for the next 100 years.

As part of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (click to view our RAP), we have a goal to examine how SCA's current and historical policies and practices have impacted on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, families, children, our partners and our employees. We are aiming to identify any potential harms caused and determine appropriate forms of recognition and justice.

A place to make a difference:

In this part-time* (3-4 days per week depending on your preference, days flexible), permanent role, you'll support the organisation to engage meaningfully in truth telling. This includes building a culture of listening and accountability, and guiding how our organisation changes in response to truth telling and how it becomes more culturally safe.

At SCA, we acknowledge and respect the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and experiences. We recognise that one First Nations person cannot speak for or be expected to represent the views of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the country.

That's why this role is structured to provide advice to operational leaders who themselves will be responsible for engaging meaningfully on the ground, and to create a practical framework to guide their practice. In this, you'll collaborate and align with internal groups, including our Reconciliation Leadership Group, First Nations Advisory Committee and yarning networks. Based in Melbourne or Brisbane ideally (though other locations will be considered), you'll report to our RAP Program Manager.

A place to feel valued:

Your deep expertise in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, communities and organisations will be invaluable. You're a skilled communicator and relationship-builder, able to navigate complex dynamics and engage with diverse audiences. You're self-organised, proactive, and committed to continuous learning and improvement.

This role requires:

  • A deep understanding and commitment to the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families and how these rights are experienced across different communities
  • Experience working in or with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and First Nations people or communities, including Elders, families, children, and young people
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage with a variety of audiences, from frontline staff to senior management
  • Strong initiative, problem-solving skills, and the ability to coordinate activities across hybrid teams
  • A commitment to upholding child-safe practices and safeguarding children's rights

Note: This position is only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants. The filling of this position is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act

A place to belong:

It takes all types of people to do the challenging work we do. We are diverse personalities, backgrounds, and talents, embracing our differences as one strong and united team.
