Location: Baird Bay, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia

Engagement: Seasonal Fixed Term

Are you an experienced Skipper who thrives on the ocean and loves sharing unforgettable moments with others? Baird Bay Experience is seeking a passionate and safety-driven Head Skipper to take the helm of our seasonal marine operations and deliver extraordinary wildlife encounters in this remote coastal paradise.

About the Role

As Head Skipper, you'll lead guided open-water boat experiences with sea lions and dolphins — one of Australia's most intimate marine encounters. You'll oversee vessel operations, safety, guest interaction, and general maintenance across the vessel and property to ensure every moment runs smoothly and every guest leaves with a life-affirming story to tell.

This role suits someone who loves the outdoors, works well in a tight-knit team, and takes pride in delivering memorable experiences on the water.

Multiple, seasonal fixed-term contracts available (01 SEP - 30 APR) each year.

Key Responsibilities


• Safely skipper and operate the vessel during hosted wildlife encounters


• Conduct safety briefings and uphold all marine safety protocols and regulations


• Proactively engage with guests — sharing knowledge on wildlife, nature, and the region


• Maintain vessel presentation, equipment storage, and daily safety checks


• Support lodge operations, including grounds and property maintenance tasks


• Work within a 7-day roster and contribute to an after-hours support environment, living onsite


• Foster a friendly, guest-focused atmosphere at all times

What You'll Bring


• Proven experience as a Skipper in a guest-facing commercial environment


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills


• Excellent boat handling skills and calm leadership under pressure


• Proactive problem-solving ability and genuine care for guest experience


• Passion for the environment, wildlife, and ocean ecosystems


• Comfortable living and working in a remote coastal setting

Qualifications

Essential on commencement or willingness to acquire:


• Coxswain Grade 1 (NC)


• Shipboard Safety Skill Set


• Marine Radio Operator's Licence


• Remote First Aid & Oxygen Therapy


• RSA


• Current Driver's Licence (LR preferred)


• SA Passenger Vehicle Driver Accreditation


• Maintenance or trade capability highly valued (marine, electrical, carpentry, etc.)
