Primary objective

Lead a regional team responsible for assisting in planning, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing strategies to improve school attendance

and engagement across Northern Territory Government schools.

Context statement

Student Attendance and Engagement is responsible for the implementation and management of a range of Australian and Northern

Territory Government initiatives, focused on student attendance and engagement in schooling or other eligible options, leading to

improved school enrolment and attendance rates in the NT.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Lead and manage a regionally based team responsible for the delivery of youth re-engagement and education compliance activities

across the Northern Territory.

2. Exercise delegations under the NT Education Act 2025 and Education Regulations in accordance with departmental policies and

procedures.

3. Review enrolment and attendance data for regionally based NT Government schools and develop operational strategies and plans to

address declines and allocate resources to support implementation.

4. Manage all aspects of the regional work unit team including data collection, practice standards, workload trends and program

development to achieve an integrated best practice approach to service delivery.

5. Develop and maintain effective collaborative internal networks and relationships, including regions, schools, cross government

agencies, non-government organisations as well as Commonwealth and state and territories.

6. Coordinate, prepare and provide strategic and operational advice on correspondence/briefings, submissions, reports, and

communication materials as well as contribute to high level internal and external reporting.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Extensive experience in the delivery of youth services, including services aimed at supporting engagement in schooling and/or

pro social activities, employment and/or VET, higher education, or training opportunities.

2. Highly developed leadership, coordination, and management skills with proven ability to achieve individual and team outcomes

through using effective interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to be innovative and manage change.

3. Demonstrated ability to manage human, financial and physical resources, including the ability to lead, motivate and support staff and

build effective teams.

4. Demonstrated highly developed oral and written skills with previous experience in preparation of high-level briefings and reports.

5. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work constructively within culturally diverse settings, including a demonstrated

knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, family, and community structures.

6. Highly developed engagement skills including the ability to influence and negotiate outcomes across organisational boundaries with a

diverse range of stakeholders.

Desirable

1. A degree in social science or other relevant discipline.

2. Formal qualification in management, organisational development, or other relevant qualification.

3. Experience and/or understanding of Department of Education functions and an ability to interpret and apply relevant

legislation into practical application.

Further information

Applicants are required to have a current working with children clearance notice (Ochre Card), a current driver's licence, and be willing to

travel remotely by 4WD and in light aircraft. This position requires staying overnight in remote communities.
