Software Engineering Lead – Defence and National Security

This role is responsible for delivering and supporting a suite of business, intelligence and military integration products that meet our customer requirements. The role is also responsible for guiding the team of software development and UI/UX professionals in the development and sustainment of these products.
Please note that a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) Security Clearance is an essential requirement for this role.
What's The Role?
- Manage the day-to-day activities of the Software Engineering Team including delivery planning, resource allocation and task management.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to the Software Engineering Team to deliver exceptional customer satisfaction through quality services, communication and timely resolution of identified issues.
- Improve the customer service experience by developing plans and processes to continuously improve the customer experience in line with the business strategic objectives.
- Develop and maintain all relevant technical standards and documentation to ensure they are up to date, accurate and of high quality.
- Provide direction to the Software Engineering Team to ensure that developers are designing, building, unit testing and documenting applications in accordance with business requirements, schedule, budget and quality standards.
- Conduct design and code reviews of applications with heavy emphasis on service correctness across various multiplatform environments.
- Engage with Defence business clients to manage the gathering of requirements and ensure that the Software Engineering Team delivers to those requirements.
- Work with Service Delivery Managers and Senior Account Manager to scope and estimate packages of work.
- Lead the engagement with other teams (e.g. Testing, Production Support) to ensure the smooth transition of products through testing and release cycles. Work with the Test Team Lead to triage defects and ensure timely resolution of critical issues.
- Ensure that change and release management processes are adhered to for all software development products.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to increase efficiencies across the team.
- Ensure all documentation is maintained and stored in the appropriate repository.
- Work closely with the Service Delivery Managers to provide input in to roadmap activities. Activities are to be undertaken on time, with regular updates provided to the Service Delivery Managers for reporting purposes to the customer.
- Create and track day action plans for direct team activities.
- Manage team dynamics and personnel matters accordingly.
- Undertake maintenance and enhancements / optimisation of existing applications.
- Being responsible for the quality of the code developed.
- Ensuring all code is peer reviewed.
- Overseeing and contributing to the establishment, documentation and delivery of development projects as well as their ongoing maintenance.
- Ensure that information security controls and policies are adhered to.
- Work closely with the team and clients in the scoping, designing, planning, controlling and delivery of projects and undertaking operational system support.
What's Your Edge?
- NV1 (or above) Security Clearance essential.
- 3 to 5 years (or more) experience as team leader managing senior technical teams delivering end-to-end development projects.
- 5+ years as a senior software designer and a proven ability to facilitate design workshops and process.
- Experience scoping and managing delivery of software capability within an agile framework. Demonstrated experience in all aspects of the development lifecycle.
- Strong problem-solving skills and proven ability to lead a team through logical problem solving.
- Proven ability to manage a small team and interactions with supporting teams.
- Strong communications skills and proven ability to facilitate inter-team communication and conflict resolution and produce software documentation in a clear and concise manner.
- Proven ability to apply software development best practice, leading and implementing innovation e.g. Continuous development/ continuous integration, DevSecOps
- Strong communication skills and proven ability to work independently within a small team.
- Proven ability to produce documentation in a clear and concise manner.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications.
- Working knowledge with the Microsoft Office suite.
- Familiarity with project management tools, including JIRA.
