In this role, you will:
- Maintain and update key datafiles that power our public-facing international development transparency portal.
- Oversee website administration, liaising with our external service provider to manage implementation of enhancements and ensure smooth backend operations.
- Contribute to broader data transparency initiatives, helping shape governance practices and drive organisational openness.
- Support storytelling and communications, translating abstract data and program outcomes into compelling communication products.
- Work collaboratively across teams to provide technical guidance, support and solutions.
- Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders (internal and external)
- Communicate and negotiate technical concepts effectively and efficiently with staff, and external service providers; and
- Ensure technical solutions are in line with business requirements.
This full-time role is not full-time technical—it's an opportunity for a dynamic individual who thrives at the intersection of data, digital platforms, and strategic communication. As the steward for enabling the technical operation and sustainment of the portal, this role combines data management, web publishing, communications and stakeholder engagement. It will be central to delivering on the Australian Government's commitment to increase transparency of Australia's $5.097 billion international development program.
The successful candidate will have a mix of technical skills (Excel, basic CMS/web skills, Jira), business analysis, communications and coordination capabilities, with a strong eye for detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Key Responsibilities
IT / portal management
- Generate and validate IATI-compliant XML files using a conversion tool (Cove)
- Upload data files and documents to test and production environments and verify changes
- Liaise with the Portal's digital service provider (Oxide Interactive) on feature enhancements, testing and implementation
- Conduct routine maintenance, including broken link checks and analytics reviews
- Assist with minor web content edits (FAQs, glossary, showcase pages)
- Maintain register of potential website enhancements, including improved functionality and user experience
- Appropriately manage risks that may adversely impact the Portal.
Data management and Excel
- Compile and maintain the Portal master data files in Excel, ensuring accuracy and IATI compliance
- Integrate inputs from internal systems and data
- Support the annual cycle of data review and update (Jan–April)
- Support new and ongoing enhancements to data download functions and data visualisation
- Support improvements to data collection and data quality processes.
Strategic Communications
- Support international development communications including:
- content and campaign development; written communications (for government, stakeholders, public and online audiences); strategic communications planning, digital communications production; media monitoring and liaison; social media sentiment mapping and monitoring and evaluations. This could encompass drafting talking points, media releases, social media content, developing and implementing communication strategies.
- Take complex policy and departmental objectives and convert them to an easily digestible format to drive audience engagement with departments channels.
- Maintain, update and develop user guides and internal help materials.
- Improve how uses data and analysis to tell the story of development program impacts.
Stakeholder engagement, coordination and governance
- Assist in the management of the Portal's digital service provider (Oxide Interactive) contract (scheduling, deliverables, issues tracking)
- Support governance functions including secretariat work for the Transparency Policy Steering Group (agendas, minutes, tracking actions)
- Proactively identify process and product improvements that support international development transparency objectives and principles
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the Portal is meeting user requirements
- Support internal engagement and communications on transparency practices and timelines
- Coordinate cross-team communications to support transparency obligations and deadlines
- Respond to internal and external queries about the Portal and international development transparency policy and procedures
Essential:
- NV 2 Security Clearance
- Demonstrated experience with data management and advanced Excel skills (incl. formulas, data integration, pivot tables)
- Experience managing or supporting content management systems or web platforms (e.g., GovCMS, WordPress)
- Experience in delivering strategic communications including: content and campaign development; written communications (for government, public and online audiences); strategic communications planning, digital communications production; media monitoring and liaison; social media sentiment mapping and monitoring and evaluations. This could encompass drafting talking points, media releases, social media content, developing and implementing communication strategies
- Strong written communication and coordination skills, particularly for cross-team collaboration
- Ability to work independently with high attention to detail and proactive problem-solving
- Ability to manage risk effectively, apply good judgement and have strong analytical skills
Desirable:
- Understanding of IATI (International Aid Transparency Initiative) data standards, or the ability to quickly learn
- Familiarity with XML and HTML or capacity to learn
- Understanding of international development sector and or programs
- Experience preparing guidance materials or delivering internal capacity support
- Relevant background in a field including communications, international development, data transparency, public administration or related sector
- An interest or capability in data visualisation, Power BI, Tableau or data analytics
