International Student Complex Cases Advisor

Why your role matters
As the International Student Complex Case Advisor you will play a critical role in the International Student Compliance team in the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success portfolio and is responsible for assessing, advising and coordinating the support needs of international students with complex needs, including those experiencing mental health challenges, gender-based violence, or other high-risk circumstances, providing trauma informed, culturally safe, and student-centered case management support, ensuring effective interventions and referrals.
The role involves regular collaborative engagement with colleagues from the Psychology & Wellness team, RaSS, Equitable Learning Services (ELS) and the broader portfolio and divisional teams, services and stakeholders from across the University triaging referrals and managing relevant student support through to completion as well as external service providers and stakeholders including Local Health Districts, International SOS, Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) and relatives of international students.
About You:
Relevant tertiary qualification in psychology, social work, counselling or trauma informed care with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience is required.
Ability to speak a language other than English relevant to the UNSW community is desirable but not essential.
A comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges international students in particular experience living abroad whilst studying at tertiary level.
Experience successfully managing complex student cases involving multiple stakeholders in a large and complex organisation.
Demonstrated understanding and ability to provide expert guidance and advice on a range of issues impacting international student welfare, participation, retention and success within the higher education sector.
Sound judgment and an advanced level of emotional intelligence with demonstrated ability to empathise and provide specialised advice to clients with a broad range of needs, especially in relation to dealing with highly sensitive, confidential, and potentially controversial matters with tact, sensitivity, and respect.
Advanced interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to advise and communicate effectively, and influencing a wide range of diverse stakeholders, including delivering presentations and training as well as mediation and conflict resolution.
Proven experience providing high quality support programs or service delivery to people from diverse backgrounds.
Capacity to support international students to navigate administrative and relevant governmental processes in a complex environment, consult and influence stakeholders and advocate on behalf of students.
Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and manage competing demands, and work with minimum supervision in a busy environment.
Knowledge, and applied understanding of relevant legislation and higher education standards including the ESOS Act and National Code 2018 and university staff and student codes of conduct, and related policies and procedures.
